It`s to prevent the wiper blades from drying out, the sun heats up the windshield and dries out the oil in the wiper blades.

On a serious note, the dashpad in my 1970 Buick is the original. The car is a convertible and spent...probably several decades of time baking in the sun, overall. Top up, top down, whatever. I put 300K miles on that car personally.

The dashpad never faded. It is as deep black as it was when it was installed in 1969. All I ever did was clean it. Maybe they fade badly nowadays...

It's to keep the blades clean. Wouldn't want them touching that dirty windshield.

The wipers cost more than the car, seriously have you bought a pair lately? I think I paid $30 plus for the last pair I bought.

I just buy the refill inserts from RockAuto.com - along with some air filters, cabin air filters and oil filters...save some good dough doing so.

Why not just pull the wiper arms up if he doesn't want them to touch his/her windscreen for whatever lame reason? Only time we do that here isin the winter to keep wipers from freezing.

I dont believe that's an issue in CA. Looks like a crazy person's car to me. I would avoid rather than provoke.
