This has been a fun thread, its rainy cat & dogs outside since Friday night and this forum has been a great way to pass time instead of just watching TV.

Back in 1970-1971 I would pass a house every morning on the way to school that had a brand new 70 SS454 Chevelle sitting in the driveway that I lusted over. It was red with black stripes and a black vinyl top. One morning as I passed by my heart sank, someone had ripped off all four wheels and left it sitting on Cinder Blocks. Not long after that someone stole one of my wheels and all 4 trim rings off my new 71 Vega, my dad heard them and scared them off before they could get all 4 wheels off. They left 4 cinder blocks, their jack and lug wrench behind...

Talking about local hang-outs, McDonalds had just launched the "Golden Arches" restaurant and Shoneys had a drive-in(identical to today's Sonic). We would circle McDonalds then run to the other end of town and circle Shoneys.
Shoneys had a metal roof over the drive-in and my '69 had a full race cam with long tube headers bolted to ASP glass packs and no exhaust pipes. I would idle around Shoneys with the car doing the race cam shake and the metal roof would vibrate like it was about to fall off. I met my wife there and she was a waitress, she has put up with her "Bad Boy" for 40 years now. Still young at heart, and still bad to the bone in my mind.

The older I get, the better I was...

In my High Schools glory days we lived in our cars. No such thing as felony evasion. Played cat and mouse with the local cops most every night. Got stopped a couple of times a night on average. Cops would warn you or listen to your BS back then. Out of the hundreds of 'stops' I was cited infrequently.

Cigarettes were 50 cents a pack with taxes.

Beer for us underage drinkers was free. There was no such thing as DUI either...

Funny you mention meeting your wife at Shoney's. I met my first wife at our local Shoney's in October 1973, I was parked in the drive in area on the end in my 74 Camaro. She was with a friend and was cruising in her 73 Chevelle Laguna and I saw her point at my car and I read her lips as she said "Look a NEW Camaro!" I pulled out behind them and got them to pull over. She gave me her phone number and I called her the next day. We went out and were married two months later. We were married 32 years before I lost her to cancer in 2006.

lol, were 79 cents a pack when I was 14 and was perfectly legal to buy them. a lot of times they wouldn't sell you the lighter though. even had them in vending machines. in fact, you could smoke in high school so long as you got a note from your parents. Ironicly, the only thing you're allowed to smoke without creating a shits storm is pot.

In the fall of 1982 I was looking for my 1st Camaro, found a mint 1969 SS 396 all original for 3500.00, I turned it down because I really wanted a 1968, plus the 69 didnt have hide away headlights which I really wanted.

The hideaway headlights, wasn't that the RS model back then? It is sad that when I see the RS model now it doesn't have it. '67 to '69 has always been one of my favorite muscle cars since a teenager in the latter part of the '70's.

Late to the thread, but my first car, I actually owned, was a '67 Camaro, I got for under $800 in ,72. Pure stock, 327, 325 hp, Muncie 4 speed, sag gears. I could go through all 4 gears and not move 10 feet. You could open the hood and actually see the ground under the car. And, you could doo all the work yourself with just a handful of Craftsman tools. (And there we not Any mm sockets needed or Torx). I've had so many other Camaros since then. I think around 10 or so, but until I got my '11 SS, none of them ran like that '67.

I grew up during the end of the Madison Avenue strip era in Indianapolis, IN. It was a reknowned top 10 cruise spot in the nation and ALL the fun that went along with it. The women, the cars, the showing off, and the street racing. Sure there was a seedy side to it, some drinking/drugs maybe fighting but the primary focus seemed to be cars or watching cars. It was fun just watching everyone leave the parking lot smoking their tires, this went on all night.

Then a younger generation came of age that played by a different set of rules, sadly all the fun was ruined by too many ambulance runs, too much litter and too many people there for the sole purpose of causing trouble.

yep, just like with drugs. when I was a kid you might find a joint and smoke it with a couple buddies on a Friday night in someone's basement. now kids are building meth labs in their bedrooms and I cant buy a box of sudafed without a photo ID.
