Because it costs them more to offer it. And since they have no real idea of how many people will actually buy a diesel Cruze in the US, they'll play it safe by offering the 1 transmission they know almost everyone will buy. If the oil burner starts selling like hotcakes, they'll probably offer a manual.

Either the gas engine is over-rated, or the diesel is under-rated. Switching to a diesel should have yielded much more than a 9.5% MPG increase. The energy content difference of the fuel alone should of resulted in more, even without taking into account the greater efficiency of a diesel engine.

will the diesel be using the same "aerodynamic features" and low-rolling resistance tires as the Eco? That makes the major difference for the Eco, and personally I hate the "low-rolling resistance" tires, because that means low grip. I wouldn't want those on a higher torque engine like a diesel.

Diesels tend to post better numbers in the real world than on the EPA test.

That said, the Cruze Eco might be a tad conservative in its fuel economy ratings. I've heard that a lot of owners are averaging close to 40 mpg in mixed driving with their car. I wouldn't doubt that Cruze Diesel owners are going to be in the upper 40s, if not low 50s.

Great news! Is there a diesel that is Equinox bound?

Perhaps. My parents both have VW TDIs. Those are rated 39 and 40 mpg respectively and actually get upper 40s to about 50 on the highway. Maybe the Cruze diesels with a conservative driving style will be good for 55 mpg all highway.

For the record, I think their 8.6 0-60 estimate is probably a bit conservative as well. With that much torque on hand, and even a little more horsepower than the gas engines, my guess is it will be a little faster than that.

But with that much torque, they can give it taller gearing -thus negating the acceleration advantage

These now remind me even more of a VW Jetta.

Never thought i'd see a diesel in a Chevy compact. Bold move, at least for GM.

One big thing that is really going to hurt it too, and really knocks out some of it's economy advantage especially compared to the Eco, is the fact that in a lot of places diesel is running a good $.50 MORE a gallon that good ole 87.

On the plus side, with a diesel, you'll never be forced to run ethanol laced fuel ever again. And with the diesel torque, the car will actually be enjoyable to drive.

Is this the same diesel engine the Cadillac ATS will be receiving?
