this is really stupid ...

from an economic standpoint this is idiotic.

To give someone $4500 for a new car they have to TAKE it from someone else in the form of taxes ... or borrow it which will raise all our interest rates ... or they can print more money which will decrease the value of all the money all of us already have and make.

So why should I be forced to pay for someone else's new car?

I earned my money. Get your hands off it.

I might like to use that money to expand my business ... or save for retirement ... or buy a new camaro!

But Henry Waxman thinks he knows best how to spend my money.

Money doesn't grow on trees guys ... we're going to pay for every nickel he spends. And to pay for it you're going to have to STOP doing something else you already had planned ... or didn't even know you had planned yet ....

I'm living through Jimmy Carter again ... it's a nightmare

I disagree with you on this issue, It seems you are blatantly ignoreing the fact that the entire auto idustry sales was cut in half basicaly over night. This is a similar planned employed in germany and it flat out worked. Think of this as a 1 year investment to keep our domestic auto-industry (which is the country's manufacturing base) alive. Though I am surprise it took them this long to figureout that for any buisness customer sales are the cure-all, not loans.

There are some problems. First of all, the bill only extends the offer to vehicles that cost less than $35,000, which means the Volt probably wouldn’t be eligible, not to mention some other fuel-efficient vehicles. Secondly, while the offer extends to foreign automakers’ cars built in the U.S., it does not cover vehicles built overseas, so the Toyota Prius — the most fuel-efficient car on the market right now — would not be eligible.

foreign cars made overseas not american but they cost over 35,000 anyways.

Decent idea, poor execution. I think there should be 3 'levels' of voucher based on who builds the car you are buying and where its built:

Maximum credit for a Detroit automaker, American built car
Nothing for a foreign automakers, foreign built car
1/2 value for a car from the Detroit automakers but built elsewhere or for a foreign automaker who's building the car in America.

To those who are saying this is Obama doing it for the UAW, please stop. How in the world does the UAW benefit when you can use it on a Civic built in Ohio or a Camry built in Kentucky? And the taxes ... anyone want to figure out how much tax is generated by the US auto industry, from sales and assembly line workers income? The increased revenue from that would partially offset the cost to the average tax payer.
