Two ways you can react to that. One is to just make fun of the Prius freak (I drive a real car to maintain my dignity, etc...). There's obviously no way to make this a friendly confrontation, so the best bet it to get out of the situation. The Prius driver is thousands of dollars invested in his supposedly responsible, green machine. Do you really think he's not all in? He's ready to defend his decision. Don't bother attacking it. Just get out of there, and represent yourself with class.

I usually ask where they plan to put the 150 pounds of NiMH battery (or in the rare case of newer cars LiION) when it fails. Many I've done this with will claim the battery lasts forever.......................they don't. NiMH can be recycled, but it costs more to do so than the materials that can be reclaimed.

Never an easy answer to smugness, though.
