I have 15,000 posts over 4 years on this website. Since I'm a mod, I pretty much click every link I see. And I can tell you, I have never received a virus from this forum. Now that I think about it, I haven't had a virus in probably 5 years from any website.

I'll never be a MAC person because they seem to put the clamps on you actually being able to tinker with it >_> and it's very trendy. kudos for making laptops/computers cool? The reason there aren't any viruses (or many viruses rather) for MACs is simply the sheer volume of PCs compared to MACs. Once they become the majority (doubt that will ever happen) then you'll see more problems, viruses, etc.

and I really don't feel like learning another Operating system.

Having worked in IT for many years, I've seen many ways of getting a virus. Yes, it is possible to get a virus off a Forum. Not directly, but if you click a website link there is always that risk of getting a virus or adware/malware.

Personnaly, I use Ad-Aware, which does a pretty good job finding and removing virus'. It's free.

I recently reinstalled my OS from scratch because I got a virus on a home PC of mine for the first time ever. It was a keylogger that I picked up because I was using a program called WoWMatrix which helped download plug ins for that game. I had run it for years with no problem, but I (and a lot of other people) got this keylogger about 8 months ago. I didn't know about it until Gmail infomed me that someone from South America (then China) was using my gmail. Got it all sorted out, but it sucked.

I adhere to the burn it to the ground theory. If you get a virus, you don't really know if it's been fully removed (even with a competent person behind the keyboard). That's why I have tended towards just flattening and reloading the OS...especially in a work environment. In a work environment, I always image machines when I can so that it only takes a half hour to rebuild the OS. And restoring documents is easy. If they have anything outside of approved software, it goes away too. It shouldn't be on the machine in the first place.

Too many people think that a work computer is their toy too, and decide to put crap software on it all the time. Our policy at work clearly says to not put unapproved software on the machine (They can get fired over that).

I wouldn't be surprised if lawyers were worse than salespeople when it comes to being stupid on computers. Though, it's hard to top some of the things I've seen salespeople do.

The stories I couldn't tell you.. (stupid policies.. Hell, I have a policy manual on a policy manual)..

Though, I do have to say.. Working at this one (and the other large firm I was at) is significantly less stressful than the global hedge fund I was at... You talk about demanding, needy, whiny little empowered children..

I learned some rather colorful metaphors from ESL people calling down from the trading desks.. Kind of like Samir trying to cuss in Office Space.

I've been using ad aware and AVG for years now.. and I completely agree with what every thing you say here... I also like Malwarebytes for removing stuff that gets on the system.
