I just left Joint Base Balad a day ago. The base is damn near deserted. Not only are all the troops leaving, but civilian contractors are also leaving.

Woot for the guys on the ground. Those of us in the air are not going to get so lucky..... To be over Iraq dose not mean you have to be in it.

didn't Bush sign the agreement to be out by the end of 2011?? not sure why so many are surprised by this. (including the GOP )
Obama has basically followed the same drawdown that Bush planned

As soon as the last troopers leave the civil war will be in full swing! They are a tribal society and will continue to be just that.

It's my opinion, and nothing is going to change my mind about that.

You right, no president except Obama has done anything around election time for political gain...

what ever makes you sleep better at night is fine... but the reality is the war is over, its time for Iraq to stand or fall on its own...
If it wasnt Obama as president it would be someone else doing it and the coming election (which happens every 4 years last time I checked) is a coincidence..LOL

Reallity is I'm sure they looked at it and said there will be those who think we're only doing this for political gain.. so what are our options.. keep the troops in country til the elections are over so no one can accuse us of that or just do what we're going to do and let the pieces falls where they may... no matter what a president does the politcal enemys will always make it look the way they want....

Troops are coming home... be glad for that and leave the political hate in your closet or maybe we should have them stay in country to satisfy you and your political message? see there isnt an easy road to take no matter what side your own.... I say welcome home troops !!

+1

Just following the plan that was already in place. I find it quite sad people/certain news outlets/current republican candidates try to spin the facts just to undermine the current administration and overwhelming jubilation seeing our troops return home...I won't even get in the hypocrisy of these groups regarding Libya.

Obama wore a suit today...so it must be a political move for the election cycle.

Have a safe return trip soldiers! See you soon!

Guys, I know this has to do with political stuff, but let's try to keep most of it out of this thread. This thread is about welcoming the troops home. Not what Bush did/didn't do or what Obama has done/hasn't done.

Thanks.

Once again, welcome home troops!!

Glad that the troops are coming home but...

It's an Obama campaign ploy. He is bringing home about 40,000 U.S. troops and what we are not hearing about is the 40,000 private contractors that he is sending into Iraq to replace them.

That's a huge risk. Private soldiers instead of U.S. troops? Really a selfish and devisive game he is playing. But hey, he wants re-election and the mainstream news outlets aren't reporting about the shenanigans being played out here. So why not ?

Welcome home troops. So long to the 40,000 "private contractors".

While I can appreciate the aspect of leaving politics aside in this thread, the only thing I have been able to find about contractors is that between 4,000-5,000 will remain in country. Please let me know what source you are using for your numbers.

My numbers are from the administration.. (I realize to most, this doesn't mean squat) lol

I was so excited to hear this, politics aside. Don't forget that when they do come home, it's not over for some of them. It takes a lot of adjusting and learning to get along in normal society again. I really hope that there is a big effort to help them work and live normally upon return. It isn't easy.
