FYI: CA still has a stupid "Assault Weapons" Ban so you will only be able to buy 10 round (or smaller) mags so you might as well go .40 or .45.

But if it is only for the house, I say go with a shotgun or pistol caliber carbine. You do still have to aim a shotgun, but it is a lot easier.

If you still want a handgun I think a double action revolver is the way to go unless you think your wife will actually practice. And modern wheel guns are pretty cool, several makers offer 8 shot .357s (and 9s) that reload with moon clips and can be had with rails and laser grips. I'd steer clear of anything compact since its harder to shoot well and you will probably never get a permit in CA anyway.

Hmmm im suprised not to many people have mentioned 40cal..... Seems underated to me. Recoil is easily controlled and stopping power is pretty damn good. Dont get me wrong I love shootin my 45 but for a good quick fire 40 is great!

For home/personal defense, i'd suggest larger caliber like a .40 or .45 (or even shotgun like someone said)

in california to get a CCW permit you pretty much have to have court paperwork of restraining orders or something to PROVE that someone would want you dead, and having a higher caliber gun on the permit application improves your odds because of their 'stopping power' (who uses a silenced baretta 9mm for self defense? lol)
And those were .22s

Glock, HK, or an XD.

For home defense I use a good ol'e fashion Remington 870 paired with 00 Buck shot. Seems to get any job done. Whether your foe is a big guy little guy or a bear. I'm prepared

Might you consider the gun I use for personal protection and its a blast to go to the range and watch people jaws drop.

.50 cal AE Desert Eagle from Magnum Research

Easy to convert from .50 ae to 44 or 357. All you need is the barrels, mags and the bolt.

I paid 1400 for mine, 2600 will get you everything you needs to have 3 guns in 1.
