I don't know if this is true or not, but it's been on the internet for awhile as a supposed newpaper article. In any case, this thread reminded me of it so I thought I'd post it. Enjoy:

MARINE STABBED BY SUSPECTED SHOPLIFTER-- AUGUSTA, Ga. - A U.S. Marine reservist collecting toys for children was stabbed when he helped stop a suspected shoplifter in eastern Georgia.

Best Buy sales manager Orvin Smith told The Augusta Chronicle that man was seen on surveillance cameras Friday putting a laptop under his jacket at the Augusta store.

When confronted, the man became irate, knocked down an employee, pulled a knife and ran toward the door. Outside were four Marines collecting toys for the service branch's "Toys For Tots" program.

Smith said the Marines stopped the man, but he stabbed one of them, Cpl. Phillip Duggan, in the back. The cut did not appear to be severe.

The suspect was transported to the local hospital with two broken arms, a broken leg, possible broken ribs, assorted lacerations and bruises he obtained when he fell trying to run after stabbing the Marine.

The suspect, whose name was not released, was held until police arrived. The
Richmond County Sheriff's office said it is investigating.

And because the Navy couldn't give a shit less about personal circumstance, I did not receive a final paycheck - in fact I am in the negative as far as they're concerned. ( Long story short, my NEC (job) was removed involuntarily and they want me to pay my bonus' back )

So, that's just awesome..... was counting on that last paycheck - with 2 month's worth of leave days to sell back - to pay my mortgage... and to a somewhat lesser extent, my car payment.

There is paperwork pending that would absolve me of any debt with the Navy, and I was told that the debt was suspended pending those results - nope. But I was told that when that paperwork comes back they'll pay me what I was expecting.... But in themeantime - I'm screwed....

I don't expect anything from anybody here... I am just venting....

You really picked a terrible time to have left the Navy, the job market is horrendous and probably going to get worse. You will be competing for jobs with folks that more than likely have much more experience than you.

I did 8 years active then 3 in reserve then quit, biggest mistake I ever made, would have been retired at 38. I know when you are in all you do is wait for the day you are out (free) but looking back it really wasn't bad at all, actually I had a great time, made lifelong friends.

Anyway best of luck to you in your job search

If you got good training while you were in you should be OK (I know I was). I hope you get the pay issue worked out.

Actually I will be planning My lessons for tomorrows classes. Also as for the Marines I tease, they tease me right back. For those Marines that I have as Friends, I would stand with them at a moments notice, as they would also for Me.

Sorry you got dicked over like that. That's sounds like the Navy I know unfortunately. I had a pretty rough time when I separated 3 years ago (honorably) as well. I drew unemployment. There's nothing wrong with that. That's what it's there for, for your transition. I hope that things work out for you. I cut my ties with the USN let them have what they wanted in the end, moved on. It's a shame they're doing Perform To Serve and good Sailors can't keep their NECs.

I got a DAMN good job right out of the Navy. They're starving for vets like us right now, despite what people are saying. You have to know where to look. Get with me if you'd like some advice on places to look. I lot of it is oilfield, space, marine, and defense jobs.

Dude calm down, it's called inter-service rivalry and it's quite normal. I can't speak for the SEALs, but yes, calling one of us jarheads a Navy boy will get your ass kicked.

yeah it's different when it's teasing between friends. Some random idiot comes up and starts calling a group of Marines sailors though...

But being in the military will give him a leg up on the competition for sure. Both jobs I've landed since I got out I only ever interviewed for once. Just exude the confidence that your time in the service gave you and you'll do fine.

Thanks for all the support! I really was just ranting and fuming about it, but you fellas are a good bunch.

As to the comments about staying in - I would have stayed, but I joined for nuclear and they weren't going to let me stay nuclear unfortunately. And to be honest, working for the military is really not what it used to be. There have been many folks - mostly older - who have told me the same thing. But, as it stands, they're talking about changing all the retirement rules, resulting in a crappy retirement for those guys. That is one issue among many that are going to change the atmosphere of military service.

I absolutely enjoyed my time in, and have made some great friends. I just think that it isn't for me anymore, and I will be better off elsewhere.

I've interviewed a TON and have had some really great opportunities. I don't think I will remain unemployed for long, but I am a bit short on cash currently - The only negative aspect so far. A lot of employers really do look at prior military favorably, and being prior nuclear is also a great help to me. So far the biggest hurdle is location. I bought a house a year ago, so moving would be a pain.

But THANKS FOR ALL THE POSITIVE COMMENTS! I really do appreciate that some people actually do read posts like this and offer up advice/supportive comments, so thanks.

Oh yeah, And Marines are part of the Navy - and "bullet sponges" they may be, but they are all good guys. They just need a ride from time to time

And SEALS... well, they killed Osama in super sweet covert operation... They're just badass!

My favorite military recruiting ad was the one where it just has a stationary shot of waves rolling in on a beach. The screen goes black for a split second, and there are footprints running up the beach. Seconds later they wash away.

Seriously, they do some cool shit!

Sorry to hear about getting the boot, I may be unemployed from the Navy here too sometime soon. Good luck getting everything straightened out.

To the Marines.. Talk crap to your Navy Doc and see what happens.

I enjoy the occasional rivalry here and there, since I work with and train Marines, Sailors, Airmen and Soldiers on a daily basis. In the end, we all get a long quite nicely. We may be a taxi service for some, but a push of a button and we'll blow shit up.
