They buy their cars for status rather than a "connection".

I don't think it has anything to do with whether you have money or not. It really boils down to whatever you see as a priority. If you love cars or motorcycles, or flowers for that matter, then you're gonna take care of them and it will show. If you don't have that passion, you might want to get the best so that everybody else thinks you have the best, but in the end, you won't take care of it because you don't really care about it!

I disagree....My wife loves her "baby" (BMW) just as we love our Camaros, she has been buying BMWs since she was 18. Shes lucky enough to be able to afford high end cars and keeps them tits..

Not all BMWs are for rich people, I know a few college peeps who drive them because they offer CHEAP series with FREE maintance. I dont know about you guys but I cant go to my ford dealer and get free oil changes, tire rotations etc on the things that I would have to pay out of pocket for.

But yes my part of town you usually see snoby brats driving mom and dads present to them or some rich lil daddies girl who thinks her sh*t dont stink cuz shes driving a low end 3series with pink butterfly stickers on the back window...

I must ran into *hate it*...one (Camaro) was parked in the front of Stop n Shop last week, black totally dirty and on the passenger side/hood.
Looked like they must have parked under a SUV with a spare tire, since it was damaged.
To the point you could stick your three fingers into the hole.

Why wouldn't you fix that?

My neifghborhood is contrary to what most posters have said here...

I live in a community that has an excellant/expensive car wash and most houses have garage, 3 04 4 car, for all their cars. Consequently I see more spotless cars than dirty ones. The wifes don't work, they have the money, and they gather at the car wash at least twice a week for a Starbucks and some socializing. I, on the other hand, will not take my Camaro to a car wash so it means I have to hual my creaky 70 year old ass out to the driveway to wash it. It sometimes doesn't get washed as often as it should.
My second car, a 2007 Envoy is parked on the street as half of my garage is full of stuff, and I try to get it washed at least every other week. But at $20 plus tip a wash, it's still a bit of a budget drag.

I see more dirty Jag sedans than I can count. There has to be a reason that so many are left to get filthy.

It's the difference between car people and non-car people.

If anyone's watched the Top Gear episode with the Vauxhall VXR8 Bathurst, Richard Hammond does a pretty good job explaining the mindset of a lot luxury car owners. I'll paraphrase him a bit.

BMW and Mercedes and Audi aren't cars to these people. They're uniforms. Their peers bought one so they feel the need to buy one too. They're like Toyota and Honda owners with more annual income.

And the problem is, these three automakers are now so obsessed with what each other is doing that they've ended up building more or less the exact same cars. Black sedans, chrome trim, leather seats, wood grain on the dash...it's gotten so predictable.

Car people, on the other hand, have a deeper connection with their cars. They take pride in them, and that's why you'll always see your average car guy or girl obsessively cleaning their vehicles.

You could eat off of most of the 5 series Bimmers here in Moscow. They are that clean! I don't know how they keep them so clean here. It seemed like 5 minutes after I washed my old car that it was dirty again. The air pollution is that bad! And in the winter, forget it! But the somehow those bimmers always seem to be clean! They must have servants that do it?!

I can name PLENTY of people I know who have exotics or luxury cars and they treat them like gold, but some people dont like cars. Some people just want a nice ride and a luxury car, so they go buy a BMW and treat it like theyd treat a honda. It was expensive, but they dont care about cars. To them its just another appliance. It has nothing to do with being spoiled or "falling into money".
