only having 315 hp don't have anything to do with the number of gears. even the 99 miatas had 6-spds behind the 142hp 1.8L

Whether it really is or not isn't even in the equation for that buyer..... the car with the higher number wins.
like 426 over 315?

In the quarter mile you are never up into 5th and 6th anyway and on the road track it is pretty much the same. Maybe at the salt flats the extra gear would help. On the street at least for me 5th gear in the Vette is just something I row through on the way to 6th. If the final drive ratios are the same 5 sp vs. 6 sp. it does not make any difference really.
usually 5 spds have a final gear around .7:1 -ish. 6 spds tend to have around .5:1 -ish. it also depends on the rear end you're using as well. 5th gear with a 3.27:1 rear is going to be more economical than 6th with a 4.56:1 (assuming the rest of the car [namely tire height] is the same)

Well I'm not going to make that claim. But it should make it competitive.

I wonder if some of you even do the research on things before you post.

In the crystal ball of the future I see the 6 speed swap into older 4 speed cars as popular commonplace as the 700R4 swaps into 3 speeds cars during the 90's
6 speed swaps have been common for quite a few years already. I have seen MANY more 6 speed swaps than automatic overdrive transmissions in non-overdrive vehicles actually.

when is the last time any of you went past 4th gear on the 1/4 ?? lol
its all about gearing not the number of gears.. check out drag racing a bit 3 speeds and 4 speeds everywhere.

EVERY single engine and transmission combination has to be federally certified and EPA tested which can cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. If they put a six speed behind the same V8 that's always had a five speed before, it has to be re-certified. Since the new engines they are coming out with will have to be certified themselves, then by adding a new transmission at that time they don't incur extra certification costs.

Go look at a 2010 model (I think they'll be in dealers soon). I was looking at the web info on them, and I believe they are all 6-speed (manual and auto).
