prices have been going up a bit but still. In 2000 the Lincoln LS was car of the year and considered sporty when it came out. all that despite only having 220-250hp @ +3700lbs. in 2001 the car of the year was the PT Cruiser. you think those cars, if released today would be able to compete in their segments? serious questions.

Ten years ago, the camaro SS interior looked like this. . .

now this

I mean. . . not even comparable. Smoother ride, much better materials, more solid construction, waaayy better overall performance, much better safety features, better sound systems, etc. etc. etc.

OK now price them all with basically the same options as show, make sure they are convertibles and are new cars not used.

How do they compare with those conditions.

I had a 64' Malibu SS convertible about 30 years ago and always wanted another convertible.
I also had a roomate in college that has a 67' camaro, and always wanted one of those.

Now I'm old enough to be able to afford most anything, and when GM re-introduced the Camaro convertible I knew what I wanted.

This will probably be the only/last time I can afford what I want, so why not buy what I've dreamed of all these years.

I'm also old enough that working on the car and making mods to it myself isn't as easy as it was in my youth, so I'd rather get what I can straight from the manufacturer so it's all covered my the factory warranties, etc.

On the surface they may not seem that different overall, but if you look underneath, at the chassis, suspension, and engine, at the materials/technology they're using now and the manufacturing they're using now, they are vastly different.

i agree with you no doubt. But is there really that much of a difference to warrant the prices?

Put it this way. I work for a company that tests automobiles, all the way from single components to enviornmental chambers that the whole car fits in and is mounted on multi-axis actuators that can shake the cars exactly like they shake as you drive them down the road.

I've been with the company for over 21 years, so I've seen the inner guts of quite a lot of vehicles.

Every day I'm still amazed at the design/manufacturing of everything and how much things have changed over th eyears.

Upper and lower control arms for example used to be simple stamped steel parts.

Nowadays it seems they they have progressed to cast/machined/welded aluminum. Sub-frames are the same.
etc, etc.

So yes, I believe that the advances they've made help drive the price of a new car up no doubt and it's worth it.

Yes I'm also surprised at the cost of new cars. The first new car I bought back in 73' cost me a whopping $2,200 including tax/license (73 Ford Pinto).

These days I have a $50k Vert on order.

I do believe that new cars these days tend to be absolutly stuffed with new fancy gadgets/gizmos that are fun to have, but we could do without easily, but they get your attention and they are no doubt high profit margin items and help drive the overall price through the roof.

Yes you are nuts!
I think its crazy people are spending that much on the 21" wheels. When there are so many after market 3-piece lightweight wheels available for that price. Good luck getting tire replacements, they are hard to find and really expensive for 21s! And you can get the GFX cheaper from an online vendor, even then there are better looking kits out there IMO.

All good points.

As far as availability of the tires, I just checked one of the local tire stores on line and they list the same tires that come with the camaro in the proper sizes for the 21" wheels. They list they can be had in 2-3 days. The front tires are $425 each and the rears are $556 each. That means a full set of just the tires will come to close to $2000.

There may be better alternatives to the GFX pieces to be had on-line, but they would still need to be installed.

This way I get them straight from the factory and they will install them as well as cover them by the warranty.

At my age I'm just not young and agile as I used to be, so I'd rather have them installed vs. installing them myself.

As I said, all valid points.

I think my tires for my 22s are like around $1300 for a set. And thats with 315s in the rear.

The Mustang and Camaro convertibles are very comparable in price. They start in the mid-30s, and well optioned, both easily go into the 40s.

Yes, this is a lot, but cars in general are getting more expensive. It's called inflation, and it does in fact exist despite the "official" statistics. Keep in mind that we are living in a world where well optioned Cruzes or Focuses (Foci?) are approaching $30k.

Another option I'll have is to put the stock SS/RS weels and tires on the car and run 20" tires.

Right now I'm thinking of putting Bridgestone Blizzacs on the 20" rims to use in the winter.

Don't let the other guys get you down. If you want a 50k Camaro vert, then by god go get it. However, I would give up the 21s and keep keep your malibu for a winter car if you are thinking about driving this car year round.

I just dont see spending 50k on a camaro vert SS. If I am in the 50k range market for a car a lot better options come to mind

I intend to enjoy the vert all year around, but I will be keeping the Malibu as well.

I love the Malibu, it's the LTZ version with the larger V6 so it's got plenty of get up and go all on it's own. It also as a huge trunk, and, it already has a trailer hitch for my small trailer.

This way if , come winter, I decide the vert is a bit of a handfull in the snow, I can always drive the Malibu instead if I can stand to not be driving the vert.
