Wish that was true, but there were no other kids around when I was talking to him. I had another teacher watch my class while I dealt with him. If he just wanted to be cool in front of his friends, he could have just told them he threatened me without ever actually doing it. They wouldn't have known if he was telling the truth or not. Besides, I really don't think he has any friends in the class. Which is sad, and possibly part of the problem.

Since your course is an elective, I really don't understand why you must go forward with this kid in your class. Can't he be transferred to another course?

I agree. File a report with the school board (not just the principle) where they should kick him out and place him in an alternative school and you should file a police report. I don't know about the laws in your state but here in North Carolina, threatening a teacher or any other school official is a felony since the Columbine shooting.

Guess I didn't realize mace/pepper spray was a "weapon" per se. I know lots of ladies that carry a mace key chain or in their purse. Nevertheless, best of luck with this situation.

The process is long however, if you step back and look at it, it does have a purpose, and is useful because with each step there is a new intervention. Hopefully, the first one works, and he is successful, and Bumblebee stays safe. Even when we had a kid create a hit list a few years back, the school could only legally suspend them for 10 days. Then they had to be allowed back in school, until the school board expelled them for 2 years. That kids was walking the halls for a few weeks before they were expelled. Makes me sick, but that is the law, not the schools rules. It’s crazy. Once again---normally I am removed from that part of the job, and for that I am truly grateful.

As budget cuts have taken their toll on the public school system I started investigating private alternatives. My children now attend Catholic grammar and high schools. We are not catholic. The reason we selected these schools as a family were the TEACHERS. As I understand it these teachers are working for about 70% of what they would earn in a public school. They make this sacrifice for two reasons.
1. They believe in a Christian education. That should be no surprise to anyone. 2. The amount of time and effort they had to spend during class time in the public schools on discipline was such as distraction they could not tolerate it. That was shocking to me. That is a sad commentary on society. The reason the feel they have so few problems in the Catholic schools they teach in is parent commitment. They feel parents have more invested because of their religious beliefs and the school tuition. How could a parent need more commitment than the welfare of their own child? I am sorry you have had to deal with this in your classroom and parking lot. |

You are right, everyone needs to be prepared a bad situation if it should arise. But I live in Illinois, and getting any weapon is pretty much illegal or really hard to get, and having one on government property is a big no-no. Now, if the criminals only followed the law, that would make sense to me.

I had a kid threaten my daughter with damage to her car in high school, this kid to from what I understood at the time was disruptive in class. As a parent that wouldn't let his kids do that crap, I talked to the teacher, school admin and ultimately the kids parents. I couldn't believe how powerless the schools are to punish kids that misbehave in class and after talking to the kids parents and seeing that they in't really want to deal with him, I did........ now I'm not gonna say what I did, but the kid never threatened my daughter again and I had a teacher thank me, and I didn't end up in jail either.... which supprised me. I guess his parents really didn't want to deal with him.

Just get a witness the next time he threatens you. I am in no way suggesting you set him up by having someone overhear the conversation then bring up the fact that you have a witness. That would be just wrong.

Now, remember as I originally posted, this particular child is attempting to be the class clown. He is very intelligent. If the world is a perfect place, when he gets called down to the Deans office tomorrow, they will be able to get through to him in a way that I could not. And then he can join the class and be successful. That is another reason there are so many steps to removing a student from the classroom. With each step there is a new intervention. Hopefully, the first one works, and he is successful, and Bumblebee stays safe.
