PS4 here. Back in 05, I purchased an X-Box 360 and got the dreadful Ring of Death 4 times in 3 years. So after the last exchange, I sold it with about a dozen games and purchased a PS3. Haven't looked back since. And if I can recall, back then you had to pay for X-Box Live in order to play online. Didn't make since to me after changing.

You will have to pay to play online for ps4 now. $5 a month or $50 a year.

You can get 12 month live passes online for 39 to $49 regularly. I've never paid more than $50 for 12 months.

Yes but theres always sales and theres always ebay vendors that sell the cards cheaper than that. Typically I renew for between 39-$49. Depends on the deals available.

Hopefully now that PSN isn't free they will get their shit together and provide a decent online experience.
