Declawing should be more of a last resort. AKA the cat won't stop scratching humans despite attempts to redirect the energy elsewhere, or the owner has an immune disease.

And it's not really an ethics or morality issue for me. It's more a matter of do you really need to perform the procedure if you really don't have to.

You can say the same about Spaying or Neutering. Use it as a last resort, focus the energy elsewhere.

How? The only way would be to keep the animal in confinement constantly. Not a big deal for most indoor cats but outdoor cats and the vast majority of dogs should definitely be spayed/neutered.

my last 3 cats were declawed as kittens. no different than docking tails on a dog. or getting circumcised as a baby boy. I wouldn't declaw a cat, that's already an adult, or even young adult....probably wouldn't own one with claws already anyway, that's older.

Because as an adult they are less likely to use their claws unless they have to. It is when they are kitten, they scratch things and people for no reason. I once had a kitten that would come up and bite you on the arm and then run away. He was a strange one.
