Did not do anything on ole Mr Hyde per se...We are waiting on the data logging cables and some other stuff that we ordered.

I went to Matt's and he kinda showed me how the tune actually reads...I was clueless but realize there are a BUNCH of things that have to be manipulated in order to make it run correctly.

We also did some checking and I am gonna have to get new injectors or worry about starving the motor for fuel and that just ain't a good idea. We are checking the local area to see if any one has any....

One good thing is that I have a good chance of selling the 24lb injectors....seems that alot of ealier Mustangs run 24 lb so maybe I can get enough to buy the 42 lb injectors I need.

Ok dude.

Nick is going to take the manifold to work tomorrow and ship it out.

Might want to get them flushed?

Either way hopefully it's all you need.

Wellllllllllllll......................the saga continues....Thinking about changing the name of Mr. Hyde to " PITA ", LOL

We have been waiting on some computer supplies for datalogging and the arrives this past Friday...We spent all weekend trying to make the things work.

I am finding out that this fuel injection system is alot like Savini....No Customer service. I spent a ton of money on this sytem from Street and Performance and for them not to be able to give me a decent tune or one that will make the truck idle is pretty sad.

This system is outdated at best. They took 1990 technology and put it in a pretty package. There is not alot of information out there about TPI tuning.

While tuning is tuning and the same rules apply you have to know the tools to use on certain systems....Each type of system has it's own set of tool and rules so unless you do alot of TPI tuning you have no basis to start.

Matt is good at tuning and tunes Honda's and LS Motor all the time but this sytem is proving to be a PITA.

I finally found a Chevy truck forum and just started asking questions. Luckily I found a guy who has wrote many of the files for the tuning program. He was able to tell us why we were getting errors and having problems trying to connect the laptop to the truck computer. He sent us some uncorrupted files. Matt spent awhile on the phone with him, ironically his name is Mark, LOL

Once we get the computer connected to the laptop we will be able to start datalogging and see actually what this thing is doing electronically. After Matt get a datalog file he will then be able to see why it is dying .

Basically it has a open/closed loop system and when it goes from one to the other it dies. The system is showing lean when it goes to closed loop and when that happens it dies. It shows no vacuum at the MAP and the computer thinks it is in decel mode and kills the fuel.

Matt says once he sees the readings from the datalogger he will then be able to change the parameters to make it idle, run and perform. Right now we are using teh 24 lb injectors just to be able to get it idling and running but will then change the injectors to 42 lb inj so that I don't starve it of fuel at higher RPM's......

I am hoping that by Friday we will have the tune issues resolved at least enough to drive around the block without dying, surging or bucking.............

I'm really taking note of this ECM cause my '91 has the same one. I know there is a place in Dothan that restores 3rd Gens and I'm trying to find that link again so I can give you his phone #. Maybe he can help with some troubleshooting or knows of some common problems with this technology.

That would be great Norm....I think the problem is that the F/I system is an aftermarket system couple that with the ZZ383/425 has a pretty good sized cam plus the tuning programs are set up for older systems and Windows 7 causes problems. I think it is more of a compatibility issue.

A 90-92 fuel injection technology, using mid 2000 programing files with a late 2000 computer operating system and you have glitches.......Mark sent Matt some updated files that should work but we will tell tonight of they did the trick.

Time for an update........I had that guud gubment training so I was gone for a week.

Got all the tuning items from Moates and like anything I had no clue of what it was or how to use it...luckily for me Matt was well versed in this.....It took him a few days to learn the ins and outs of this particular system but once he got it figured out then the ball started rolling.

Our main issue we saw was no vacuum at idle....no vacuum means it is running rich and the computer compensates by cutting fuel. This causes it to die.......So after a few sessions of playing with the tune Matt got the vacuum to around 15 and it idled perfect.

It idled long enough to do some data logging, to check the electric fan for proper function and to begin looking at what the motor was really doing....He played with idle and alot of different parameters to kinda get the best idle quality we could.

Once he got the idle like he wanted he data logged it 3 different times so that he would have some reference points to go off of.

THEN.............................................. .................................................. ....

As with anything I wanted to her it run especially since it was the first time I had heard it run right. SOOOOO we cranked it again.......all of a sudden a LOUD whistling noise was coming from the motor. I thought it may be a bearing on the accessories drives because that would be too easy to fix...........NO not even close.

Next thing is Matt grabbed a can of brake parts cleaner and started spraying the motor checking for LEAKS and in particular VACUUM LEAKS. We noticed that when he sprayed certain areas of the intake that the engine rpm's raised up. HMMMMMMMMMMMMM

So then Matt showed me what was happening. The unit from Street and Performance has to main "stacks" that supply air to the motor. Since the unit is generally smaller and makes it more difficult to work on people normally put "Riser Blocks" on the intake manifold to make things look more proportionate and give you a little more room. They are about 4" blocks and raise the air intake up.

Well at each place they touch the intake manifold and air induction unit there are seems. Well it seems that the bright and shining star who installed the unit on the motor used clear silicone to attach the riser blocks. It wasn't much of a problem before because of the low vacuum but now that the motor has the appropriate amount of vacuum and it is putting stress on the silicone, couple that with the fact of the heat generated and basically the silicone is breaking down and flaking off and when it does it is causing a vacuum leak which in turn makes it run rough. Kinda like a viscous cycle.

It is apparent that they did not put a gasket on the risers when they put the unit together. I have no clue why.

So then we started looking at how they attach........... and the best way to describe it is that the entire unit has to come off the motor as one unit since the air intake and riser blocks are secured internally to the intake manifold... this is the only way we see it coming apart since the only external bolt we see is the intake manifld bolts. Pretty much have to take the entire motor apart....pull the radiator, A/C, Alternator, pulley assemblies, fuel lines, wiring etc.....to say it is a PITA would be an understatement. Since all of this stuff is chrome it makes it more tedious to take off since we don't won't to tear anything up or scratch anything.

Luckily the only thing the vacuum leak will effect right now is idle quality....Sure the performance will not be dead on but it will run and fairly well but just not right.

I could take the PITA attempt to remove it and install it right at this time but since the truck is going to be painted and the motor removed then...we decided to let it be for now. Once the front clip is removed by the body shop then we will remove the motor and fix and little issues like this since it will be MUCH easier with the motor on a stand than trying to climp over fenders and lift the unit off the motor with outstreatched arms.

Matt is going to work on the rest of the tune and get it right in all ranges and then we should be ready to go for a test drive...Hopefully, fingers crossed, and any other superstition I can think of...LOL.

I should have know this was coming though especially after all the other things we have found...but at least I know it is right this time.

Dang! I simply cannot believe all the crap that shop did wrong!

Do you think they did some of this stuff because they were po'd or do you think they are really that inept?

You poor guy. Keep on chugging. Eventually you'll get it all fixed correctly and you'll have the truck you've always wanted.

People seem to think that silicone is the be all cure all for everything. I can't tell you how many times I have went into peoples homes to fix things that other people repaired...many times with silicone. While it may work for a little bit it usually fails. Now heres the kicker to all this......When they set the intake manifold onto the block they DIDN'T use the RTV sealant instead they used the rubber gaskets that are guaranteed to leak.

I am wondering the same thing Emma.......at first I was wondering if they did this on purpose trying to sabatoge my truck or if they are really this inept.....but as the lawyer told me it really doesn't matter which way they are because it is not right and I paid for right. Even if they didn't know and are trying to pass themselves off as Street Rod builders it is still fraud.

This just delays the inevitable for them...pictures are worth a thousand words and I have 300 pictures so far. I am getting them blown up to 8 x 10......

I keep thinking that this may be the week to drive it but inevitably once we get one thing fixed , 2 more areas show themselves.

I guess the good thing now is that EVERYTHING has been gone through except the internals of the motor and since it was a GM crate motor I am hoping they couldn't screw that up.

Just makes you sick to think of what you paid and what you got....I expected a little tinkering but this is way overboard.

I am lucky that Matt is helping me...if it weren't for Matt I would be royally screwed.......and here is the funny thing about Matt.....Matt is 25 yrs old and was 15 when I started this project and he knows more than the guy who has been doing it for years.

I was a little worried in the beginning when he cut the wiring harness out of the truck and through it on the floor but my worries had no basis because he is the real deal and knows his stuff.....if it has a motor he can fix it.
