The Lamdas (Traverse, Acadia, and Enclave) are full size crossovers, not midsize. I believe the current Equinox straddles the line between compact & midsize so it can shrink a little bit & there will be decent breathing room between it and the Traverse.

Basically we'll have a busy crossover line up...

Subcompact Gamma-II: Chevrolet Trax/Buick Encore
Compact D2XX: Chevrolet Equinox/GMC Terrain
Midsize C1XX: Chevrolet (Blazer?)/(GMC Acadia?)/Cadillac XT5
Full size C1XX: Chevrolet Traverse/GMC Acadia (XL?)/Buick Enclave

So what size class is the Tahoe in this lineup? It looks like GM is making a SUV size hierarchy that's the counterpart to its cars:
Sonic
Cruz
Malibu
Impala

Its a full size SUV, not a crossover. It it would beside, not above or below, the Traverse. Then after Tahoe comes the Suburban.

So Traverse is not considered an SUV anymore? It's a CUV? When did the nomenclature change? So if a vehicle is body-on-frame, then it's an SUV? But if it's a uni-body it's a CUV? The times, they are a'changin!!

It's always been that way. In fact the term "crossover utility vehicle" was conceived because they weren't true truck-based SUVs.

To some, all 'utility vehicles' are labelled SUVs. Just like how some group all trucks, vans, and utility vehicles into 'trucks'.

To me, if it has a unibody, transverse (sideways) engine mounting, and powers the front wheels by default its a CUV. If it is body on frame, longitudinal (lenghtwise) engine, and RWD its an SUV. By that, the Traverse is definitely a crossover. But this isn't a perfect way to categorize things. There is a growing number of RWD-based vehicles with a uni-body that don't fit cleanly into either group. Some, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee are considered SUVs. Others, like the Porsche Cayenne are thought to be CUVs.

Others make a more functional distinction. If it is built on a car-based platform it's going to be a crossover. If it has at least modest off-road ability, it's an SUV. Where do things with their own unique platform but no off-road capability lay? Probably a crossover. Likewise, if you have a truck based vehicle with 0 off-road ability. Most would call it an SUV, though the ones that don't tend not to call them crossovers -just 'things that should not exist' . The Escalade is a prime example.

Did I muddy things up for you?

When I had my HHR, on the registration it was listed as a "Sports Wagon". LOL

GM is reportedly looking to subcontract out full size van production to AM General in order to free up production capacity at Wentzville for midsize trucks.

Given the way the Colorado is selling, that makes a bunch of sense. Guess we'll see how it manifests.
