I'm still curious how Ford plans to make 100 more hp out of .4 liters without direct injection. Does the 4.6L suck that bad??

They won't...and I don't think they plan to until direct injection comes out.

Yes it does. They cant even make any decent power with it unless they put a blower on it.

it already can make that power in the 5.0 DOHC crate motor and that's an older version of what is coming

The changes are a bit more involved than another .4L, although the biggest improvement is indeed due to the larger bore that goes part way toward giving us that extra .4L. The trick here is that the improvement yielded by boring this engine block has more to do with how small the bore was to begin with rather than a simple displacement increase. The problem here is that the 4.6L's 3.5 inch bore really stymies engine breathing, so badly in fact that it has put a limitation on the level of improvement you can expect from improved cylinder heads in naturally aspirated trim. This is one of the reasons why forced induction seems like it works so well on these engines, the valve shrouding the smaller bore brings to the table becomes a far less important issue when the atmosphere turns artificial.

The 5.0L 'revision' solves this problem by moving to a ~3.63 inch bore, which may not seem like much at first glance.....but it transforms this engine. The GT500/GT derived heads this package will utilize make sure that bigger-bore, problem-solver of an engine block is topped by the best set of cylinder heads a Mod motor has ever seen. Throw in a revised fuel injection system and a revised intake setup and 100hp isn't at all difficult to believe. In fact, at this moment in time 400hp is just about exactly where a well-executed, mass-production, hi-po take on a DOHC 5.0L V8 should be.

Believe what you will. It's 400+hp and that is without direct injection. Even better? The engine represents a noticeable fuel economy improvement over the 4.6L it replaces.

It's still difficult to fathom for me. Doesn't matter that much at this point, though. If it does, then it does. We'll see in 2011, I guess.

2010 Mustang

I have never been a Ford fan (raised GM), and have always disliked Mustangs (with the exception of Shelby GT500's), but I have to say, I love the looks of the next Mustang.

If I were a Ford guy, I would pick it up as fast I as we are all trying to get our Camaros. I would have to get it with the full window top option though.

But still I really doubt that Ford will give the new Camaro any big challenge. I am sure that it will go to independent suspension, and of course a power upgrade (im going to guess around 420ish to TRY to keep up with SRT8s and LS3 Camaros). Maybe if both Mustang and Challengers have 420+hp Automatics, then Chevy will give the 2011 year Automatic SS's the LS3 also, and make the L99 as an option for LT and SS.

Also, I am wondering what the Shelby's are going to look like. The 2010 Mustang doesnt look like it is a visual platform that suits Shelby, but who knows.

What is Everyone elses opions on the Italian design Mustang, and do you think Shelby will be able to make their GT500's look unique compared to real mustangs, yet still look...well put-together?

Try to put your GM biases aside, I know it's hard, but try anyways.

I have no bias against Ford or Mustangs .. I have owned 3 ... 1995 GT, 1998 Cobra, 2004 Cobra ...

I hope they do bring the power and the IRS .. it will be good for everyone I think. I'm actually more partial to the 03/04 Cobra body style, but the current body style lowered looks pretty mean .... Look forward to seeing if they bring back the 5.0 aroun 400hp for the GT that they are talking about ..

2010 is only a reskin, they may gain 20-30hp from tuning or minor changes but the driveline will essentially stay unchanged.

2011 will be the same as the 2010 model.

2012 is when the new driveline will debut in the mustang.
