Stupid and immature yes.

Pressing charges fully based on what was stated on a public forum with no video proof is insane.

People state stuff all the time that is not true on forums.

What caught him is he plead guilty. If he stated he lied or playing they could not press charges.

I am happy that no one was hurt and thrilled the police were able to do something about it.

Everything posted or emailed can come back to haunt you....

Where did you get there was no proof? They even said they would not have proceeded if his own neighbors hadn't come forward and given statements.

There were two other items he posted about that they couldn't find proof or witnesses for so they didn't press charges.

He didn't plead guilty out of the goodness of his heart.

The post wasn't enough evidence. But a witness came forward and gave a statement. They charged him criminally and he plead down to a lesser, non-criminal charge. He did it, got caught and deserves worse. All he got was a fine and a 1-year driving suspension.

I may speed sometimes but NEVER EVER in a residential street. I'm glad they took the car away and he should be limited to 100hp or less until he has kids of his own.

Actually, facebook is becoming a favorite tool for police across the US. Also there are limits to what you can post about, threats and commission of crimes can be acted upon by local police.

The eye witness that was willing to put forth a statement certainly helped. The more serious charges were dropped most likely because of the lack of evidence aside from a solitary statement.

You can say whatever you'd like on forums and generally it's very difficult to hold it against you in a legal manner, however if someone in the community files a complaint and you plead guilty, it certainly adds fuel to the fire.

That's insane that he was tracked down off of a forum...that's what he gets for speeding through a residential area at that speed, just plain stupid to do something like that.

That's completely different, making threats is illegal referred to as Assault.

A traffic violation on the other hand has to be witnessed by a LEO in order for the violation to have happened. It's a moving violation, which would be different than leaving the scene or something of that nature.

Must be a Canadian thing to bust someone of traffic on hear say ...

I agree I mean the kid is an idiot and you should never ever speed, most of all in a residential area. With that said the kid could have gotten out of it. A forum post is not sufficient evidence to convict someone of a crime. I understand that there was a witness that would testify that they saw a M5 speeding in the area however that is circumstantial evidence and there was no proof that it was his M5. My guess is that the police intimidated him during questioning and got him to confess to it because the kid just didn't know any better.

This is a perfect time for everyone to see this:

It should be mandatory viewing for all drivers.
