I actually tried this back in 96 when I was 17 with my 94 Dodge Shadow and a gas power leaf blower under the hood. It didnt add any HP when I pulled on the shoe lace throttle. On the 2nd pull the duct tape broke loose and my hood blew up at 50 mph.

I considered making an electric supercharger for my mechanical engineering thesis project. However, I gave up when I figured out the power consumption rates. Basically, an electric supercharger would probably pull more power than most alternators can provide. So continous opperation was out, but for short term boost (used similar to nitrous) on a small engine (like an I4) there was a little bit of potential. But for the most part, its just a bad idea.

To answer the OP's question, you only have to look at the size of the power cables running to the "supercharger". Pressurizing the intake system even to modest levels requires a good amount of power - certainly more than can be supplied by any conductor the size of a pencil lead. The only electric supercharger I've ever heard of that had a hope of actually doing anything but making your wallet lighter is this one:
http://www.turbomagazine.com/tech/04...ger/index.html It puts enough draw on the electrical system to require upgrading the battery, and is fed by cables bigger than the one going to your starter. Any of the POS modified bilge blowers people are selling are a waste of money at best, and something that gets sucked through your engine at worst. A while back, I think Garrett was working on a turbo-alternator - basically a turbo with a motor/generator center section. Charge the battery during cruise operation, reverse the current flow to spool the turbo up for zero lag. I don't know what ever happened to that project... |

Oh you can do it. Its a matter of powering the electric motor, unless you want to drain the battery while using it. The problem is that most alternators can only supply say 2 hp of power while a small supercharger can easily require 10x that.

" It would not take a vehicle more than 30 seconds to reach over 100 MPH, during this period the supercharger would be working when your vehicle is floored."
30 seconds? That takes just around 12.5 flat to reach 100 in my car! In 30 seconds it'd be somewhere around 135-140! And I hate it when my vehicle gets floored, it is bad for its self esteem! |
