I recall something in Detroit a few years ago, proposed or implemented. Basically for theft.

That being said, the woman you spoke to is clearly an idiot...........just my opinion.

They will actually use number stamps and stamp a registration number on the bike based on local records. I've helped do this at Police Department Sponsored bicycle rodeos.

It amazes me in this day and age the stupidity that still prevails in regards to race creed or color... etc...

Exactly it is a courtesy not a law. They engrave an unique number on the bike in a discreet location and record it in case of loss. It is good PR work for local police and children.

My college town did - California. When I was overseas on a military base, they had to be.

It's kind of stupid... what's next? Rollerblades? Skateboards? How about those annoying freaking shoes with the wheels in them?

ITS ONLY BECAUSE BICYCLES ARE DOT APPROVED FOR ROAD USE.

Rollerblades Skateboards are not DOT approved and why they can kick you off the road. A bicycle can go anywhere but an expressway only do to the min speed of 45MPH law.

Not here in North Carolina. But in upstate NY as a kid, we had a bike license (not one of the cute ones with your name on it either).
