I don't recommend starting with a 250cc bike. Not sure how the laws are up North, but we can take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course and use their 250cc bikes, and get your license directly when done. Not sure how big you are, but you'll outgrow a 250cc in a week! IMO, go sit on lots of different bikes and get a feel. You're better off with a 650CC or 750cc - won't kill you at the twist of the throttle, but room to grow...

I started on a 600 my self. really glad i did. like michael said not sure how big you are but i am ready for a 1000 now. granted a 6ft 3 and 200lbs on the dot. my 600 is a blast to ride. been riding for 2 yrs now. I would get a nice used 600 to start with if i were you.

Its a work in progress - 1982 Yamaha XJ650 maxim, short chop bobber project. I'm almost finished getting it running perfectly again (right now its running great but it has a vacuum leak thats causing it to drop revs really slowly and to idle at about 2000 instead of 1050) and then I'm going to move into the fabrication work.

Agree with these guys. I bought a Ninja 250 last year, after taking the class. I really bought it for the lady, but i used it as a starter for myself as well. I went on a 150 mile ride straight from the dealership. I was ready for a 500-600cc by the end of the day. Dont know how big you are, but I'm a bit bigger myself. 6'2", 230#. IMHO, take the MSF class, get the feel of the 250's they use, and get yourself a little bit bigger starter.
