the thing is Consumers Reports is not one small magazine. It is one of the most respected of these type publications, and like I said, Many people trust them without question.. hell they could tell people that the Yugo was a Best Buy and people would buy them like hotcakes... Believe me that they are listened to by all manufacturers...

I really don't think people listen that closely to them. The news agressively reported Toyota's congressional hearings, but yet they were only a couple thousand units behind from being the number one automaker in the US.

There Toyota goes again - rolling over to please their customers.

It's because nobody trusts the news to be unbiased...

And people trust the likes of Consumer Reports and MotorTrend to be unbiased? They're paid in the same way news companies are, which is through advertisements.

One reason people trust Consumer reports is because they claim all their ratings are based on actual consumer surveys. And they also respect their tests as being unbiased because they do not accept advertizing from anyone...

Consumer Reports is probably the most influential publication for typical buyers of Toyota's. It was largely due to CR that Toyota has their reputation. And they did all they could to perpetuate that idea too, by doing things like giving every single Toyota a recommended pick, even if they've never driven it.

I could go on and on about the problems I have with them, but I'll save it for another thread.

I assumed Consumer Reports was paid through advertisements like MT, however it seems you're right on them being a non-profit organization.

Don't all SUV's have the tendency to flip if you are going fast around a sharp turn?

While this would be terrifying for a typical Lexus buyer, its a very impressive drift:

CR has since then suspended their recommendation Toyota vehicles until the problem has been fixed. This combined with all the major news sources covering Toyota's problems still hasn't shown a decrease in sales. They were up 34% last month? Point is: Toyota's (previous) reputation has been branded into the minds of the average consumers, and despite all the negative media coverage, they still seem to come out ahead.

Definitely a cautionary move. They obviously don't want another unintended acceleration fiasco.

The only reason it hasn't effected thire sales that much is all the incentives they are now offereing that they never have had to offer before.. and some people will buy on that factor alone...
