I just heard about it. Never have idolized any Hollywierdos but this guy was one of my heroes, a man I'd have been honored to meet. Loved watching him teach his sons Josh and Jake to be men and the pranks he played on the other captains. He was my favorite.

Back when he had his earlier health problem when slamming into a dresser in his cabin had broke up a blood clot in his lung (why he was coughing up blood), he almost died then. He spoke about having the same blot clotting disease that had killed his mother pretty young. So I guess it's no suprise that a stroke eventually killed him, lifestyle or not.

Fair seas and following wind, RIP Capt. Phil.

Phil and his boat/crew was 50% of the show IMO. He lived fast and hard and didn't take care of himself. Staying up 24-36 straight hours on end for the big money takes a toll on you especially being older, a smoker and out of shape. When he was coughing up blood was a sure, serious sign to slow down or stop....but he likely believed he couldn't let down his crew.

He will be missed in the upcoming seasons and the show frankly will NEVER be the same.

No doubt his lifestyle and all those Red Bulls and cigarettes didn't help him, but his mother also died young of the same genetic blood clotting disorder that he inheritted from her as I posted above. So sadly it isn't much of a suprise he died of a stroke which is brought on by blood clots lodging in the brain. He was coughing up blood because slamming into the dresser in his cabin dislodged a blood clot which went through his heart and lodged in his lung. A small miracle that he didn't die then.
