I think Ford and GM should share I4's and V6's, but not V8's.

I agree. There is enough competition oversea's.. It is either this or we see Toyota buying out GM in ten years...

I wonder why they did not talked to Chrysler, to would be cool to see the big three working together

does the Chrysler company have Any hybrids at all?...

this is one reason that gm may be trying to go with ford rather then w/ Chrysler...

ford is at least trying to come out with significantly better econ cars...
whereas it appears 2009 will be the first year of any Chrysler hybrids..
while all that stands, i still favor Chrysler over ford. they do however need to step up in the econ cars if they wanna get anywhere...they have potential tho. ford however has screwed up for too long & too often.

I think it's sad that ford could only get the Escape Hybrid to get 20 city / 20 hwy

sorry to sound like ur typical ford basher. but i am what i am.

ya, this could be a good thing for GM and Ford but could spell even more disaster for Chrysler but if they all teamed up...
put the LS9 in the viper or let GM play around with the 8.4 V10 it has now

Interesting. I like the idea of shared transmissions better than shared engines though. Generally speaking, few care about the tranny in a car so long as it works. But engines are part of what defines a car. But for 'regular cars' where few can tell the difference when badges and names are removed, it might work.

On a bit of a side note, I think that the best partnership between domestic makers would be Ford and Dodge. Dodge has a styling department that creates cars which get a reaction from people (both good and bad) and can make decent performing cars, while Ford seems to be able to make vehicles that are fairly reliable (I would like to point out that I was raised on FORD = Found On Road Dead). Seems each can gain a lot from the other. And they overlap each other as much as GM overlaps itself.

It turns out that this whole deal is primarily focused on Hybrid powertrains.

GM would like nothing better than to share the Volt development costs with somebody else; thus cutting initial costs, allowing them to offer the Volt for a more "reasonable" price...and possibly even make a penny off these cars....but that somebody has to have substantial experience with hybrid powertrains, and that somebody must obviously NOT be Toyota. Ford, on the other hand would probably like to get in on the next big thing in the Industry: E-flex.

Of course, there's always the possibility of a collaboration on conventional powertrains, too; but for now it's all about the Hybrids.

Dear god, please don't let the sound of a GM engine starting EVER resemble the sound of a Ford engine starting...I hate that sound.

Manual transmissions, maybe...but automatics, well, no automatic is as nice or as versatile as a GM automatic.

Have you ever driven a V8 powered car with a 700R4 or 4L60E in it? They hold at the MOST (in stock form) 350 Ft/Lbs before they start to self destruct.

The 4L65E was a little better and the 6L80E is MUCH better.

The 4L60E was rated at 600 Ft/Lbs in first gear (engine torque X 1st gear ratio) and the 4L65E was rated to 650 Ft/Lbs, while the 6L80E is good to 800 Ft/Lbs...

The ultimate GM transmission was the almighty Allison 1000, hooked up to the Duramax's!

That can't be right the auto Camaro makes 395ft/lbs X 4.03 (1st gear ratio) ~= 1500

Been driving a 4L60E for six years and 175,000 miles now. Despite a moderate amount of towing a 6000 pound trailer up and down mountains, it has yet to destruct. However, I know its reputation...I didn't say they were tough, just versatile and nice. It shifts into the gear I want when I want it automatically, and if it doesn't then I just select the gear and it's pretty obedient. When I'm in a hurry, it does a good job pretending to be sporty; when I'm not, it does a good job pretending to be economical. When I need to drag the camper, it gets the job done.

It's hooked up to my 2002 GMC's 5.3.
