Well I was going to post a bunch of stuff, but Fen (as usual) took care of me.

China is very protectionist. In fact they have laws that prohibit outside companies from owning more than a 50% stake in a company.

But keep in mind, Chinese Companies currently own Hummer, and will likely own both Volve and Saab before it is all over. Rover and Jabuar are now owned by the Indian company Tata.

So unless Americans start getting even remotely concerned over where what they by is made it won't be long before China is a huge player in the U.S.

Just sayin'

I want to put up for consideration an alternative way of looking at this. Everyone, take off your shirt and shoes. Where were they made?

Most people already have lots of Chinese stuff. If GM has to build stuff in China to sell to the Chinese, why not also sell some of it to the US? It allows GM to save a little with the cars that had to be made over there. GM does make a large proportion of its products using the UAW, but that cost has to be at least partially offset with cheap labor. I'd rather everything be built with the best workers, but sometimes you have to work with a communist government to turn a capitalist profit. On the other hand, GM has become an increasingly worldwide brand. Perhaps its work force should reflect the same. :seesaw:

Which can very well mean this isn't the case anymore.

That said...Korea, Japan...why not China.

We like to complain...but don't kid yourselves: America at large doesn't care, like #3 said. Your shirts, shoes, hats, pants, etc...most of it's from China. And it's because this country breeded a generation of cheap fools who'd rather save $0.30 than support an American product. Money is king, so they say...Anyways, this drove companies overseas. And now, I fear it is far too late to reverse the trend -- it would take a monumental effort on the part of America-at-large, and even then -- the Chinese are so firmly entrenched in our economy (thanks to us) that forcibly removing them from the picture could have dire consequences.

...Wonderful isn't it?

EDIT: I DON'T want the following comment to turn things ugly: but I'm truly shocked and impressed that the American Auto Industry has kept so much (over 80% - more, I believe, if you include Mexico and Canada) of their product built/designed/etc in this country this long...and I would bet, like'em or not, we have the UAW to thank...

So I'm sure I'm wrong about this, and that it's probably not possible to do, but it's just an idea non the less. Anyway, China is known for being "The Worlds Factory." If that is true, then one could argue that much of the economic growth there is thanks to our industries out-sourcing production. What if companies (of any industry) were to move their production to other countries with cheap labor, such as South American or other latin countries. I think this could spread things out more so that no one nation can become stronger than ours as a result of our industrial production moving there. If anything, it may end up being cheaper to produce there, since these countries are way closer to us than China (shipping). Anyway long rant - but in any case, I would hate to see auto production outsourced.

They have been doing this for years in the auto industry. It's all good though because soon our American salaries will all average out with the 3rd world country that is hot that year. The whole world will make $3.00 an hour with no benefits.

Now that is progress, Right? We f*** everything up here.
Thanks Unions, Thanks big business and thank you greed. Maybe one day you will understand balance

I totally agree with capitalism, I just think a few extra regulations are in order to keep things like this from happening.

a free market works well when competing against other free markets. Problems is, when everybody else "cheats" you are the one that gets screwed. If America were to mirror the trade barriers that others put up nobody could complain without looking like a jackass. How could one complain about America when they're doing the exact same thing? Could trade wars ensue? Possibly. But for the most part, other nations need you more than you need them. Assuming they understand this, they'll play nicely.
