It's easy to read the directions and just add the correct amount of octane boost to the correct amount of fuel. Its simple math.

Not at all - he just needs to stay out of WOT/heavy load. Realistically, even under WOT he should be fine as the knock sensor should pull back any timing beyond where it should be.
