Can't beat the mileage but I think that's a bit on the high side for price. I'd hit them with a low number and see how they counter. Probably could get it for below $4k with some negotiating.

My daily beater is a 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport with 218,000 miles on it... I bought it 6 years ago for 5800 and had 147000 miles .. Mileage is not the greatest, but they are easy to work on..

I sold a 2000 Blazer LT 4x4 V6 2 yrs ago for 4500. It had 80K miles, new tires, new brakes(rotors, calipers, & pads), new A/C unit, new radiator, tie rods, & shocks All options and leather, no dents or damage. Best I could get after 2 weeks. The top end had all new gaskets because of the antifreeze that went bad - typical of V6s during that timeframe..

That makes me feel a little better about the 4999 price tag on the 1997. The Carfax shows one owner but doesn't have much in terms of a service record. Under the hood wasn't bad for a 20 year old car. I drove it around the block, but didn't like the way it felt. Maybe because I'm used to a newer car and truck, but I walked away.

I appreciate the input from everyone.

I've put my search on hold for the rest of the week. I don't want to buy one "just because i can". I want it to be the right purchase for me.

Have you looked on Craigslist? It's funny, I was in pretty much the exact same situation as you a couple months ago trying to find a winter vehicle. I was mostly looking at Libertys and older Grand Cherokees in that same price range/miles. The Chevy/GM trucks I had seen in that price range were all over 200k miles or rusted out pieces of junk. Then after a few weeks of searching Craigslist every day, I found a clean '06 Tahoe Z71 with 110k miles for $6500.

Obviously most people only want cash on Craigslist, not sure if that's an option for you.. Just saying they're out there. Otherwise, the Libertys seem to be good trucks too.

If your going to get a liberty. Get an 10-11 model year. Solid engine and transmission. Very solid off road. 5000 tow capacity. I own one. Daily drive it and tow my race car to the track with it.
