Amazed by lack of responses. I'm the strange one out in my neck of the woods (in and around NYC) as being one of the few who doesn't speak more than one language. I'm having a tough time coming up with people I know that DON'T speak a second language.

Those guys are in there speaking Mexican! I thought this was a funny comment made by one if my coworker friends. It mqde me laugh. I felt it was my duty for inform him that Mexicans are a people, not a language. I guess if you put it that way, then i speak Mexican too.

The reference of being ashamed of what you are goes deeper than most people know. At least thats how it was for me. I was raised with English as my first language and Spanish came along later. Why? Even though my family was born and raised in America, at the time we were growing up there was a lot of racism.

You couldn't go to a store, restaurant, drive through or anywhere unless you spoke English. When i was a kid i saw it happen where someone was denied, rudely, service and sent out the door. At the time i didn't understand why. I found out why later in life. My father and mother told me the same thing. You must speak English. Thats fine because none of my friends spoke spanish anyway. Just thought id share.

I don't think I'll ever be 'conversational' in French again though.

I know a few words of Chinese. A bit of German, mostly nonsense. And enough Spanish to get me into a fistfight.
Patois? Yeah, that will throw you a curve... had a HUGE dose of that in Jamaica.

I can get by w/ a bit of Spanglish... and a few German words, my ex was half.

Now, live in Hawaii for a while and learn some Pidgin English...

Of course, being from Texas, I'm told I have my own language as it is at work.

I found this article :

Quote:
While these are the spoken Chinese dialects you are most likely to encounter, there are many more! Spoken Chinese is separated into five main dialectical groups, of which Mandarin is only one. Yue (which includes Cantonese), Min, Wu and Hakka make up the other four, covering more than 200 individual dialects.
Interesting !
