I think the tell tale sign of any specific models success was/is due to a less aggressive design. Looking at the beginning of the Mustang sales, the car had a wide appeal due to the styling being attractive to a broad spectrum of people. Ford did a refresh for the 1967 model and sales dropped in part to competition from Chevrolet, a more aggressive appearance for the Mustang and probably a topping out of the market segment.

Looking at the sales of the Mustang II it did well because it was cheap and conveyed a presence that it was non-threatening. Lot's of people look for cars like this so as not to attract unwanted attention to themselves.

Ford softened up their appearance for the new Mustang and sales have responded accordingly. It looks like GM has followed suit with the Camaro, yet they went the other way with the Corvette. We'll have to wait and see if the strategy for the new Camaro will have it's desired result for Chevrolet and it's parent company - GM. IMO, the interior and performance options will help year-to-year sales growth for the Camaro, but I'm not sure about it maintaining its sales lead over the competition.

A 1996 GT was a complete dog vs the Z28 counterpart. It was even worse in 1998. People really didn't care about performance at that time it seems. I got my 01 Z28 brand new for only a couple thousand more than a GT that I test drove down the street so I don't think it was a price thing. Just goes to show people will value car looks above all else.
What you are looking at there is the death of the Camaro.

In the end of the 4th generation Camaro the V8s still sold pretty well. The V6 coupes on the other did not. That basically became a pretty crappy car.

That is why I've been such a big proponent of the Gen6 being a great car first. If the Camaro can't sell a huge number of L4 and V6 coupes the V8 will have a short life span. Something about those that forget history......

My only fear for the 6th. Gen is most people will look at it and go meh, looks the same as it has for the last 5 years. The majority of buyers will be 4 & 6 cylinder cars who are more worried about looks than performance and won't appreciate all the new tech that's going into the car. And my be turned off by the evolutionary styling.

I guess you'd also have to figure in mercury Capri sales then.
