With a hands free device, you might be looking at the road in front of you instead of your phone, but you're not paying attention to the road. The brain basically goes on autopilot and you ignore everything thats going on around you. Traffic lights, car doors opening, pedestrians, cars switching lanes, traffic piling up behind you, brake lights in front of you, street signs ... it all falls to the wayside if you are focusing on your phone when you're driving.
"Safer" and "safe" need to be established here. It is much "safer" doing hands free texting and talking over hands on. It is still not as "safe" as not doing it at all. It's risk reward like everything else in society. Cancer cells latch on to animal proteins in our body. Does that mean we should all be vegans. Blocking all cell phones In a car is just ridiculous, cops need to crack down on cell use by the driver even more than they already do, there will always be SOME risk but I agree it needs to be less of a risk than there is now

Rant Over....
Happens to me all the time with people texting, do people really have that much to talk about? And what did those same people do when we had no cell phones. Those drivers are a pain in the ass and it should be illegal in all 50 states IMO.

But... but... but... Now they are building new cars that have wifi in them. Why? So you can use your phone more!

I have successfully texted while driving my manual transmission and holding and eating a bag of popcorn at the same time. It's a matter of being able to multitask properly.

I did too, plus I was standing on my head and juggling at the same time too.

One of the main reasons I got rid of my Cobalt SS Sedan, well that and it was always in the shop getting fixed because of horrible quality control. I went thru a period in 3 months were I was almost killed by people texting 4 times, all of them would have been head on collisions on backroads where the speed limit is 45 and above. The worst one though was on a 4 lane road and I was in the far right lane and a teenage boy was coming the opposite direction in the far right lane and I could see him from about 100 yards out and his head was down and his car just started drifting out of his lane into the left lane and then into the oncoming traffic left lane and barreling right at me going 55mph. I swerved off the road and he looked up at the last minute and jerked the car back across 3 lanes before hitting me. Would have been a front left driver to driver head on collison. As soon as i could get back on the road I was turned around going after him ready to beat the shit out out of him, luckily for him I got caught at a light and he made it thru. Probably for the best that i didn't because almost dying because of some idiot not paying attention will set off the hulk in you! That was the 4th and scariest incident involving a texter. All of them happened during the day and it is an epidemic far worse than drunk driving. At least with DD I know my odds of getting hit by one go up at night but with a texter it could be anytime. I knew if i got hit in that Cobalt i was a dead man and combined with the constant state of problems with the car i sold it and bought a Charger. Probably would still be dead in the same type of wreck but would have a better chance in the Charger plus with kids in the car with me often times I couldn't take the chance in the Cobalt anymore.

Some old guy almost walked into me on the sidewalk one day and he wasn't staring at a phone.

Distraction doesn't discriminate, and you shouldn't either.

What if I told you there are perfectly legitimate reasons and needs for using a cellphone in a moving vehicle? Gonna just throw those out the window?

And if its an emergency well you have the little red button on top of your rearview mirror dont you? Hit that.
What if I also told you that not everyone has one of those in their cars?

I like your thinking, but it's a misguided train of thought to just abolish ALL cellphone communications simply because the vehicle is moving.
