Don't know why that's a surprise. Think about it... in the first 3 the "Republic" (See future Empire) had infrastructure, funds, technology, leadership. In the second 3 the rebels were basically using whatever they could get their hands on, but had no real funding or anything. The Empire on the other hand had all the resources it needed.

After "Jedi", both the rebels and the Empire basically have nothing. Everything is assumed destroyed. The rebels overthrew the Empire. And the destruction of the Death Star didn't even signal the end, but rather the beginning of the end. Does anybody think the Empire just quit the day that Vader and the Emperor were killed?

So now you have a destroyed Empire/Republic who will have nothing, and a group of Rebels who already had nothing. No major government or infrastructure... it's basically like recovering from a world war. Picking up the pieces does not allow for a lot of time or money for innovation.

It's a question of legacy...See it this way, Episode 1-3 were like the Gen 2 Camaros, and 4-6 like the fifth gen Camaros...they brought back the first gen style and Gen6 won't change much either....

My favorite was Splinter of the Minds Eye. It was one of the first "spin off" novels.

Looking forward to this movie. I hope it comes off more like the old Star Wars movies and not Episodes I-III. I and II weren't too bad but, III was lame as can be. It was like they rushed the last 30-50 minutes of the movie trying to get all the players in the right spots to keep with the timeline of IV-VI. It didn't work.

Oh boy not sure how to address this one.

The original Star Wars from the year 1977. The space ships in the film were actual models built by hand and filmed. There was no CGI crap (I know it's hard to imagine) and "special" effects were special for the time but now are not even sort of special. THAT is why the ships and vehicles looked straight lined and basic, that's all they could reasonably build and put in place. Also that fit the 70's era thinking of what ships would look like.

Now in chronological terms the prequel films were 30 years before but armed with crazy new CGI abilities etc the ships got exotic and wild. Dooku even had a solar sail ship which was fanciful thinking long ago. I find it beyond any possibility that Lucas meant to make the stuff from the originals be more simple than any future prequel. It's like the New Star Trek films. All the stuff they had and the effects were way better so I guess that means they lost technology as time went on in the TV series by this way of thinking.

Good points here, and along my same line of thinking.

I am so excited for this movie! Abrams seems to be really trying to get this right--even going away from so much of the CGI that took away from the prequels. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Two suggestions:
The Thrawn Trilogy

Darth Bane: Path of Destruction

The Tie Fighters already had Bluetooth and USB 3.0 ports, how much upgrading could you do? I mean, ain't no reason a Stormtrooper needs leather interior. I don't even know where to start with the additional trunk space. Man, do you even look at the specs before just throwing a bunch of techno-blah blah out about how the new fighters don't look "new"?

I had to watch the trailer again. So pumped.

I hope it gets shown in not 3D as well. There are about 10 good seats for 3D movies and unless you're the first one there then you're SOL.
