They kind of had to re-boot it once they cast Chris Evans as Captain America. You can't have him play Cap and Johnny Storm in the same cinematic universe.

Granted, I'm not entirely certain they will ever cross this (or Spider-Man) over with the Avengers, but their casting choices definitely would have prevented it.

With this re-boot, they conceivably leave themselves the option to have a major crossover movie if the right scenario comes along...

Now, if only they could have an X-Men / Avengers crossover. The thing preventing that, though, has entirely to do with which studios own the rights to the franchises, but that's an entirely different story of its own...

it's sure too bad Universal has the rights to Namor. He would be amazing with the Avengers.
