I hear what you're saying and would tend to agree. My wife's bank had many of her customers involved with the target breach, and all they did was to close the cards and issue new ones right away. No changes to limits with them were imposed.

Let this be a learning opportunity. This is a minor inconvenience (definitely qualifies as a "first world problem") but what if bank account access were completely cut off due to a cyber attack, financial crash, or who knows what. Ask people in Greece and Cyprus what it is like. Never have all your eggs in one basket and keep cash on hand for emergencies.

If it were across the board I would be concerned but it's only the high risk accounts. My account with chase has not been limited but then, I don't shop at targer

I still don't understand why they just wouldn't issue new cards to those accounts.

I have no clue, perhaps those accounts are some how linked to other accounts which would make it more difficult, could be timing, but I'm sure they have there reasons.

Personally for me I would be closing mine and requesting a new one if this happened to me.

To be honest, there's a possibility I would too depending on the account type, risk factor etc. I try to protect myself for these situations. I have 1 card I use for transactions made on line or over the phone, every time they raise the limit I contact them and have them put it back. This way, in the event it gets hacked It's a loss that wouldn't be as bad as it could be. With today's economy you're almost forced to use plastic but you can protect yourself to some extent.

I don't use debit cards for purchase transactions for this reason. Too easy for a criminal to empty an account if the card is compromised. I only use credit cards for purchases. We started keeping both bank and credit union accounts back when Bank of America wanted to charge for every ATM transaction. As others have pointed out it is handy to have options.

In addition to the Target breech there has been a rash of credit card clones. I suggest everyone request new CC with new acct numbers, Seems that if you leave your CC out of sight like when paying at a restaurant employees can skim your CC data. I was a victim of this fraud and I warn others.

Here's a question...

Target apparently had the data breach...but why was it only Chase cards that were targeted? Most databases would include all data from all companies, and Chase isn't the only company out there...

So why was Chase data affected.
