Good to see an engineer get the top spot. Hopefully that means good things for the future.

I think the female part of it is rather irellevant. But she her long list of qualifications make me very confident that she will do great at the helm of GM especially since she is so product and design focused and will have Reuss at her side for product development. Seems like GM is finally designing cars based on engineering not the beans spent.

If a person is qualified for a job no matter what job it is, it shouldn't matter what Gender, race, or nationality they are. Also, it shouldn't be made to be a big deal either when a certain gender, race or nationality gets a certain position either. I wish her the best and hope that she doesn't mess up what GM has been doing to get things turned around.

Seen her on the CBS news; as stated in other threads she is an engineer, interned at GM at 15 yrs old, her father worked at a GM assembly plant for 39 yrs. She stated that 1st car she fell in love with was 1967 CAMARO convertible when she was 14..and has worked on the Corvette systems with input on the new CAMAROS...& she is now 52 yrs old; so i thinkthis is the best fit for anyone who luvs performance vehicles and she can drive my Camaro anytime!

You are correct, however this is a huge milestone for women in corporate America. That glass ceiling is starting to crack ahd hopefully will soon crumble & fall to the floor so we can sweep it away forever. I am very proud of Chevy for recognizing that the most qualified & best person for the job just so happened to be female.

(I could not find this thread for a while, I see they merged a couple of threads)

Good for her. I'm almost done getting a degree in mechanical engineering. Tell her I said good luck and not to give up. It's a difficult degree to earn.

"No more crappy cars". I'm sure she was talking about the Aztec and most stuff from the 90's but it's good to hear she's dedicated to GM.

The "You go girl" was more meant as a congrats or good for you comment. If you saw any of the news reports on the appointment you would have seen the stats on female CEO's & execs which I don't recall exactly & don't have time to look up now as I have to get to work myself. But the stats are rather pittiful. Some industries are better than others but many are still awful. To some extent in some segments it is attributable to few women taking certain fields of study. But in other areas it is more like in my field. I work for the largest provider of community mental health services in the US. More than 90% of the staff in this field has always been female. Yet more than 90% of the top execs & CEO's are male. How does that happen? So yes there is still inequity out there. Your comments are a bit confusing as on the one hand you seem to get it that both genders are capable of achieving the same success in any field they choose but you seem uninformed about the inequities that still exist in equal pay and in the percentages of females in CEO positions & upper level management across the board.

I hate to say I stopped reading here, but 20 out of 500 is not equality.

Women can do everything men can do at work, but somehow the decision-making jobs are snatched away from them.

I think one reason this happens has nothing to do with their abilities to perform the job, but more for the fact that women tend to take things more personal and have a harder time letting things roll off. They also tend to play favorites more. Studies shown that most employees including women would rather have a male boss because of this. I think if they could keep their hormones and personal feeling out of their work that there would be a lot more woman in power positions. I have no problem with anyone, no matter what they are, doing any job if they do it well and are respected.

REUSS does/will continue to do great things in Product. Lost talent, sorely needed, if he twiddled his thumbs with boardroom types and Washington/Wall St. powerpoint pals.

BARRA has a folder full of varied proven talents that are well-placed at ALL levels REGARDLESS of audience...and she KNOWS the product side is well-watched by Reuss.
