Hmmm....dispatcher. That's something you could do...

clerk...person who takes the calls...and
dispatcher...person who gives out the calls.

We're civilianizing a lot of positions in our dept right now. All the sworn officers who are dispatching are being put back out into the field due to not enough officers on the street. We've had a bunch of trainees lately. Some good....some horrible. I WON'T go into stories about this.

But, if you can multi-task...like seriously multi-task, dispatching is a very respectable position. You have a lot of officers to watch over. I can't even begin to tell you how much I love one of our dispatchers up in the communications office...Kat. She is freakin awesome....period. No one can even come close to her ability....and she works WITH the officers taking the calls. It's increadible.

It can be stressful. But, it's not a bad job. The have the ergonimic chairs, you are at a desk (not hurting your back any further). If you're interested, go for it.

The state of Wisconsin already has this for Wisconsin residents who join & serve in the Military -

Wisconsin G.I. Bill Tuition Remission Program

The Wisconsin G.I. Bill provides a full waiver (“remission”) of tuition and fees for eligible veterans and their dependents for up to 8 full-time semesters or 128 credits at any University of Wisconsin System (UWS) or Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) institution for continuing education, or for study at the undergraduate or graduate level.

In accordance with 2005 Wisconsin Act 468, signed into law by Governor Jim Doyle on Memorial Day 2006 and effective with the 2007-08 academic year, the tuition remission is a full 100% of tuition and fees. (Beginning with the 2005 Fall semester under 2005 Wisconsin Act 25, sections 702m, 702n, 709m, and 709n, the remission provided to dependents was 100% and to veterans was 50% remission.)

The Wisconsin G.I. Bill is a state program that is entirely separate from the federal VA's Montgomery G.I. Bill. For more information on the federal G.I. Bill, see the Wisconsin SAA page.

For additional information, eligibility criteria, instructions on how to apply for the Wisconsin G.I. Bill, and statutory citations for the program, see the WDVA B0105 information and application booklet.

See the UWS WisGIBill FAQs or WTCS WisGIBill FAQs for frequently asked questions regarding the Wisconsin G.I. Bill and the University of Wisconsin System and the Wisconsin Technical College System.

Wisconsin G.I. Bill Tuition Remission Program for Veterans

For the Wisconsin G.I. Bill, the veteran must have been a Wisconsin resident at the time of entry onto active duty. Character of service and active duty service requirements apply.

The benefit recipient must reside in Wisconsin.

For veterans, there is no post-service time limitation (such as the federal Montgomery G.I. Bill 10-year delimiting date) on the use of the benefit. The veteran may attend full-time or part-time.

The benefit may be used for continuing education, or for study at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Wisconsin G.I. Bill Tuition Remission Program for Dependents

A 100% remission is provided to the qualifying dependents of an eligible veteran:

Spouse; or

Unremarried Surviving Spouse; or

Child between the ages of 18 and 25,
Where the qualifying Wisconsin (must have been a Wisconsin resident at the time of entry onto active duty) veteran:

Is currently rated by the federal VA with a combined service-connected disability rating of 30% or greater (Effective Fall Semester 2005); or

Died in the line of duty while on active, Reserve, or Guard duty (Effective Fall Semester 2005); or

Died as the direct result of a service-connected disabilty, as determined by the federal VA (Effective July 1, 2006).
For qualifying spouses and unremarried surviving spouses, the benefit must be used within 10 years of the date of death or the initial disability rating of 30% or greater. The spouse or unremarried surviving spouse may attend full-time or part-time.

For qualifying children, the benefit is available from ages 18 through 25. The child must attend full-time.

For the Wisconsin G.I. Bill, the veteran must have been a Wisconsin resident at the time of entry onto active duty. Character of service and active duty service requirements apply.

The benefit recipient must reside in Wisconsin.

The new GI Bill, just passed: increases monthly $$$, about $1,000 per year for books etc... and allows a BAH type payment for housing during school. Up to $1,000 per month for rent etc...
or you can pass it on to dependants. Good improvements.

Does the Washington GIB. require all other GI Bill $$$ to be used prior?

Texas has the Hazelwood Act which waives ( for Texas vets ) tuition at State colleges/Universities, but the GI Bill has to have been used or unavailable...

good luck TFord

unfortunately theres a bit of a good ol' boy's system where Im at. As you can tell I dont quite fit in with that group. I had a job lined up that was civil service, It was exactly what Im doing now plus 1 extra thing. I was offered the job and the whole 9. The all of a sudden HR comes back saying that Im not qualified for the job, and someone is starting tomarrow. And guess what they want me to train the person who took my job, how to do the job. Its not gonna happen!

On the resume side: I recommend that you develop a couple of resumes. Tailor them toward different types of potential employers.
Example: Walmart greeter... not so technical. Civilian Tech Rep... very tech.
Anyway hopefully, you get the point.
If you are soon to be 'separated' how soon? I may have missed that post...
Anyway, it could give you time to set yourself up... If you are at least E5 and have some college (other than MIL) several colleges work well with MIL. and will max your electives out for Navy schools etc. And if you take the right 5 CLEP exams ( math, english, science, etc) and take about 5 classes with a select school for Residency, you can earn an Associates Degree in under a year, depending on your specific situation. Is there a Columbia College on your base? The new GIB can also be used for trade (vocational) schools, which can be a few - several months... If you get a med sep are you getting a sep compensation pkg or ???? I lost a couple of Staff SGT Marines due to their knees.... about $35k back in 1999 or so. That could hold you over while you get smart

how is your Career Counselor? working for you? or too busy? I used to be Div CC, 00-03? or so. if you have any specific ???? let me know.
