I'm not 100% about this, but GM may be sandbagging those MPG numbers...

So 15hp/ 7 lbs. ft down on the current diesel they sell over here? Hmm...
Is the Euro version's output 'SAE certified'? If not, then the difference is likely due to the different testing procedure. GM likes to make sure that everything in North America is rated by the SAE test, which can be a tad conservative compared to other procedures. It might also be de-tuned slightly because of the stricter emissions standards in the US

Hrrmmm. Not sure how to feel about this. I have been looking forward to the Cruze diesel for a long time. But I thought they could do it at a low 20s price and MPGs in the upper 40s at the very least. I guess the things like MyLink, and the leather help to justify the costs....but why make them standard?

GM had better NOT be sandbagging those numbers, b/c they are going to need all the reasons they can to get this baby to sell. First impressions on a new product are key, and so far I'm not sure if the initial impression I'm getting is a good one. I hope to learn more about it though and hopefully the combined mileage will be the real key instead of just the HWY numbers. Hope to see it succeed.

Unless you drive like 50000 a year, makes more sense to get the gas.

Be hard to make up 5k + upfront

Agree somewhat. This car is definitely for someone who drives quite a bit, or someone who keeps their vehicle for a long time. Otherwise the costs may not justify the purchase.

the era of cheap diesel engines is long gone.

EPA 2007 added exhaust soot filter systems (ATDs) and 2010 added selective catalyst reduction tech (piss fluid) to the mix so diesels cost several thousand more than a gas engine.

yesterday at work one of my guys replaced a NOX sensor on an 2011 Isuzu NPR turbo 4 cylinder that I had diagnosed and ordered the sensor.
cost $500 for one sensor and made in germany, daimler licenses the BlueTec SCR to most diesel truck engine makers.

I've never been a fan of diesels of any sort. But it's good people that do now have another choice.

Dealer materials are saying "more than 42 MPG."

That's the same language they used in 2009 to discuss the LLT. When Ford bumped their V6 numbers, GM issued official SAE-certified values to stay ahead of the competition.

I was thinking the same thing when they said the 2010 Camaro would have at least 304HP same as the CTS was SAE rated at. Then when they finally rated the 2011 they found it had 312HP.

I agree with DG. 42 sounds way too low...should be in the upper 40s to near 50 given the gas engine ratings in the same car.

If the gas engine can get 39, a diesel should be able to achieve about 44 just on the energy content difference of gas vs diesel fuel alone. In addition, a diesel should be more thermodynamically efficient than the gas, not less.

My ol' lady just got a Golf TDI after a steady diet of high revving but very reliable Honda's and loves it.
Especially since she hates going to the gas station...
And yes she drives around 45K miles a year.
I don't know if she would have got the Cruze Diesel though since she did not like the car with a gas engine...
Oh I get that it will be more fun to drive.

But I'll use your mileage as an example.

45,000 per year = 42 mpg Cruze diesel = 1,071 gallons

38 mpg gas Cruze = 1,184 gallons.

Today's prices here: Diesel 4.39 Gas 3.59

Diesel per year at 45,000 miles = $4701

Gas per year at 45,000 miles = $ 4,250

(And yes I get the mpgs will vary, this was to just give people the idea of how much a diesel is actually saving you.) Or in this case, costing you more
