Yeah there are different levels of coverage. I believe the "safe and sound" basic package is $9.99 or $14.99 a month and it goes up from there.

My wife and I just got off the phone with them and its now fully canceled. We are not responsible for any charges over the last 8 months. So a word to the wise, MAKE SURE you call them to cancel the service once your trial period is up!!!

Onstar has grown on me, and for 250 bucks for a year of the higher end service I think I will try it out longer. Being new to the area its nice to just have the directions on the car. Yes I have a smart phone but google maps doesn't always find me, a GPS unit is also nice but can be dated. Its not for everyone, but it does come in handy.

The discount I get on my car insurance for having OnStar's basic program (that includes theft recovery) far outweighs what the plan costs...so it's worth it to me.

If you log onto your account, they have better pricing. safe and sound is 13 bucks a month, and Directions & Connections is 25 a month. You can get a better deal if you deal yearly subscriptions.

Yeah, they have to activate it, atleast that was the case when we bought both of our cars. Both times we just wanted to go home and here they come with the Onstar activation presentation

Ugh, OnStar. Yikes. Dealership setup the account for me when I bought the car (I'm pretty sure they're required to) but I never pushed any of the buttons, nor did I listen to any demo or marketing call. I think they tried to call me once while in the car but I didn't take the call. Didn't do anything with the notices to complete setup or that my free trial was expiring soon either (other than throw them away).

Guess I'll never know just what exactly the "navigation" part of the DIC even does. It shall forever be a blank page to me. Oh well.

Hello everyone,

I wanted to provide a little clarification on this topic.

When you purchase your new vehicle from the dealer they typically activate the introductory service for you. Then, as sonnydurden mentions, they ask you to press the Blue Button to discuss your account. This action confirms your trial and allows you to update your account and learn about the services available to you.

OnStar has two plans available for subscribers - Safe & Sound and Directions & Connections. The Safe & Sound plan is $18.95/mo and includes all of OnStar's emergency and security services; - Automatic Crash Response, Roadside Assistance, Hands-Free Calling, Remote Door Unlock, Vehicle Diagnostics, and Stolen Vehicle Assistance. The Directions & Connections plan is $28.90/mo and includes all of the services from the Safe & Sound plan, as well as unlimited Turn-by-Turn Navigation. Sometimes there are promotional rates available, you can call from your blue OnStar button or 1.888.4ONSTAR anytime to see what is available.

To cancel your OnStar subscription, you can call 1.888.4ONSTAR or push your blue OnStar button and ask an Advisor to cancel. Should you decide not to continue with your paid service, your OnStar system will be deactivated. All services —including Automatic Crash Response and Emergency Service — will be shut off. Your vehicle will not be able to contact OnStar for help, even in a crash.

If you don't call in to cancel the services then a notification is sent that informs you that the account is scheduled to go into continuous coverage. If there is no response to this notification, the services will continue through monthly billing to the credit card on file. OnStar attempts to keep a credit card on file for this convenience to avoid any lapses in service because of the safety and security that we provide. You have the option to cancel or enroll in annual subscription at any time.

If anyone has more questions, or would like me to check into your account to make sure things are set correctly you can send me a message with your account number or home phone number associated with your account. I am happy to assist in any way I can.

I've tried the directions once in my car, my trial ends at the end of December, won't be renewing it. Why - I received a package in the mail, over $400 / year for the same service you folks in the US get for half the price. For the one time I did use it, it was fine, but haven't needed it since, certainly not worth over $400/year. For directions, I'll use my smartphone.

I'm more than happy to share my renewal package on here so you can see the price difference.

Canadian dollar has been par or better than the US, however no one is adjusting pricing accordingly. hmmmmmm

Had to chime in here for a few benefits that we get from OnStar.

Cops can track it if stolen (like LoJack) and
they can slow it down if its moving and disable it when it stops. This gives lower car insurance rates as someone else mentioned.

With my smart phone, I can unlock the doors and have had to do so a couple of times for the wife. She doesn't have a smart phone.

I can check the mileage, oil life, fuel level and tire pressure with my phone. Those of you that knows what a pain it is to keep up with the wifes car can follow that. All it takes is the free app.

We don't but you could have phone minutes so if your wife broke down where cell phone coverage is shoddy, you could get thru with OnStar.

We just renewed the most basic plan (safe and sound) which only leaves out turn by turn directions for $149 for the year. We were previously in the free 6 month trial period.

We didn't but we could also do the Family Link. If you had a new driver in your family, this alerts your phone as to the whereabouts of the vehicle.

Probably most of you kids have cell phones, I don't. I have one provided for me for company business. So when I' m not working Onstar is perfect. I have no need to carry a cell phone when not working. Just my two cents.

I enjoy having it...I just believe $28 a month for the directions and connections is a bit high....If this was $11.99 for the safe and sound and the directions and connections, then I would take it!!!
