Well, I said I was moving before, and it's official now. Although the timeline may be June/July rather than May. My wife and I were down in Houston for a couple days last weekend, and got to drive around and check out some areas we were considering. Once it gets closer to the actual time of the move, my company will pay to send us back down and use a week to actually pick where exactly we will be living. She particularly liked The Woodlands. So we will see once we get closer to moving time where exactly we end up.
Also, when I picked up my SS from Becky D, she had nothing but great things to say about the Houston Club. Looking forward to being down there. |

well if you do move into the Woodlands, there are quite a few of the HTCC that live in that neck of the woods, so there will be plenty of people to show you around.

update on this! My wife and I now have a target date for moving, and it's soon: March 14, 2013. I'm supposed to be going down in a week or two to view rentals that are being researched for me right now. Came a little sooner than expected, and kind of at a bad time, considering I have to pay plenty back in taxes soon. But my wife and I are just glad to get this done with and get settled in. Also, the sooner I'm down there, the sooner my new pay rate goes into effect

Anything North of Houston and outside the loop! Spring/The Woodlands area is good but traffic SUCKS on 45! I live out in Cypress, a little less conjested but getting there.
There are places that will emissions and safety test your car with mod's for a lil extra! Lots of nice cars around town, GREAT shows, and several COOL car clubs arounds. Htown Camaros, HoustonPerformanceDriving are two of the best! |

As someone else said, I would be careful on I-45, especially when it changes and becomes 5 or 6 lanes wide. I do not live there, but when I visited it seemed like that stretch of the highway would be accident prone. I would just try not to tailgate and leave a nice buffer space in front of your car. I bet traffic comes to a stand still very often.
If you do get any kind of speeding ticket, remember that in Texas, you usually have TONS of options that let you get out of the ticket. First is defensive driving, and if you don't qualify for that, you usually can choose deferred adjudication which is more expensive, but you won't get any points on your record. Houston seemed to have lots of nice restaurants and many areas reminded me of Dallas. My memory says that this city though was very crowded no matter where you drive. You may be able to occasionally visit San Antonio from time to time for some fun, or some of the beaches down there. I am not sure I would eat any seafood from the gulf though. I have wondered if the fish from there are safe to eat due to all those oil spills. Good luck to you in your endevours there. I used to drive to a city called Humble which is north of Houston, and there did not seem to be much traffic there. |

Welcome to Houston! You are going to love it here.
What part of town are you going to be working in? Houston is very large with about 6 major areas of business concentration. They are spread out in all directions. You would not want to work in the Clear Lake area (Southeast) and live in the Woodlands (Northwest). There are great areas to live throughout Houston. I live in Kingwood which is in the Northeast side of town. Hwy 59 North is the least congested freeway in Houston and I can get downtown in about 40 minutes. You really need to know where you are working before you can choose a location to live. Remember Houston is about 90 miles across in each direction. As Sir Nuke said, he lives 60 miles out of downtown and then it would be another 25 miles to the Woodlands. One freeway to avoid is 290 in the Northwest side. That thing is a BEAST. I quit a job because I could drive 30 minutes and get 20 miles under my belt. The last 3 miles on 290 would usually add another 20 minutes.

I will be working near the international airport on the north side. It's right off the beltway in north Houston. I am trying to live in Northwest Houston. I'm actually working with a realtor/apartment locator (i will be renting for a year or two before I decide to settle anywhere). I'm supposed to drive down sometime in the next two weeks to view their selections for me and choose one.

Woodlands or Spring would be nice. You might consider Kingwood on North East side. I live there, and I can make it to the airport in about 15 minutes. Much less traffic on this side.

Military?
If so why not leave the car registered in OK? I would say change your state of residence so you don't pay state income tax.

Can't really say anything more than what people have already chimed in on. So good luck with your move and hit us up on the H-town forum if you have any other questions or need any help.

Arrived in Houston this evening to start my week of apartment hunting. Got a rental v6 charger. Not a bad ride, but the wife and I miss the Camaro.
