So what if GM has operations in China? Do you honestly expect that everything has to be done here? If you're going to sell in China, it only makes sense to build there too. Like I said earlier, exporting product from the US to China would be a logistical and economical nightmare. It's the same reason why every Holden exported to the US from Australia has been fairly low volume, shipping the vehicles alone increases the base prices of the cars by a fair amount.

If it makes so much sense why was my camero's engine made in mexico and the car assembled in canada then shipped to Louisiana. The truth is those cars in china would face a 100 percent duty to import them from the U.S. The U.S has no where near that import tax on anything imported here. This alone seriously affects America's ability to compete in the world markets.
Previous posts about forien car companies building here and paying way less for thier labor because they are non union..... well thier cars cost us the same as if they were built by union workers. They just make more profit to send back home. I am not a union worker and I have nothing to do with the auto industry. But if america continues to export every job that pays a meaningful wage overseas the issues we have here today with our economy will only get worse. Before anyone is critical about china's ability to build anything ask yourself this, Just how many 8 year olds in america could assemble a car?

I didn't watch the video because as others said any video titled "General Motors is becoming China Motors" screams smear and baseless conspiracy attacks.
That said, I think the last time a major business could seriously insulate itself to the US market was in the 1980s. It would be backward and stupid not to grow into new markets, especially since Americans already have 2 or more cars per household and quality is going up. Growth here is not going to happen unless population growth occurs. In nations where industrial revolutions are occurring there is a lot of room for quick and rapid growth in manufacturing, it was why manufacturing here was so profitable when our industrial age began. Very few had a car, a tv, a radio or a refrigerator or anything that we take for granted today. Now other countries are beginning to get the things we take for granted and any smart company wants to be a part of it. Also, let's not forget that when a company earns profit in another country, we benefit. It would be extremely beneficial for our companies to do what Honda, Toyota, Volkwaggon and the many other foreign competitors have done and embrace other markets. I know that many have this conception that when you buy a Toyota vehicle you are buying one that was specifically manufactured in Japan, but this isn't true. There are plants here that make these vehicles and employ our citizens to do it and I think it benefits the auto market to have that kind of competition. Let GM or any other domestic open plants in other countries and sell to these markets to capitalize in the same way. Yea the manufacturing goes there but the profit comes here. |

Where are Camaro wheels made at? OMG! China!!
![]() Profitability is what matters. GM must make it because I doubt GM, or any other large company, will get another bailout.

Do people really think that every car that GM makes should be built in the US and then shipped to its final selling market?
![]() Sounds like too many people never took a simple macroeconomics class in high school.
