They don't necessarily have to close their doors, but they will no longer be a Chevy dealership. They can still provide service, possibly parts, used car sales, etc., just not using the Chevrolet nameplate or selling certified Chevrolet cars or parts. I'm interested to see what the exact details will be. They just announced in our local newspaper that the Buick, GMC, Pontiac, Jeep dealer will be getting rid of their Jeep line because it's a Chrysler product.

We must also consider that closing GM dealerships does'nt mean only Chevy. Consider that Pontiac and Saturn are being cut so all 1100 or 1200 wont mean Chevy only

These 1,100 do not include Saturn/Hummer I don't think. They are targeting 2600 dealers by the end 2010. They actually need to cut more. Toyota has more sales and makes due with 1,800 total dealers.

Closing dealerships helps GM by reducing the logistics nightmare that they have to deal with. Its cheaper and easier to send 40 cars to 4 dealerships than it is to send those same 40 cars to 5 or 6. I'm sure there are other factors as well, but thats the most obvious one to me.
