Take a can of compressed air and blow out the ignition switch. Then, gently, run a fingernail file in the keyhole. Very very very gently. Then, take some fine grit sandpaper and run it over the key where the contact point is. The wire looking circuit on the side. Sometimes there isn't good contact and it'll put the security light on. It's a VATS deal. Or, you could look into VATS bypass.

I did the vats bypass on my 91 it was super easy and no more problems with the stupid VATS.

I assume that's the little transponder in the column? How do I go about bypassing it? Also gonna assume the vats is separate from the alarm, correct?

Yes. VATS sends an ohm reading to the ECM. If it's off or non existant it'll shut the car down. Not sure if it's the fuel pump that's shut down or what. But it can strand you.

I must be lucky because I've never had a problem with this and I've had the car for 6 years. Everything else has broken at some point though.
