In Northern California, although we set out "bass fishing" many times in freshwater lakes and ponds, we NEVER caught any bass. Instead, there were plenty of bluegill, sunfish and amazingly even a sturgeon once. Furthermore, I don't believe we ever saw anyone else catch one of those elusive big or small mouth guys.
