I keep my cool under emergency situations pretty well and think I could handle being talked down through a landing.

Mythbusters did a show that featured this possibility. Per the show, apparantly the plane actually can land itself on autopilot... but they wanted to test the myth so their assumption was that the autopilot was broken as well.

They then tested two situations. First, they tested whether they would be able to land the plane with no outside assistance (both Adam and Jaime crashed ... one quite spectacularly). They then tested whether they could be walked through a landing with verbal instructions through the radio (both Adam and Jaime successfully landed the plane).

Based on that, I feel pretty confident that I could do it with assistance from an experienced instructor on the ground... even if the autopilot were all borked.

Id give it a try, its better to at least try to save yourself than to just give up.

And I would try to land the plane, I've flown a few small planes and took the controls of a helicopter for a little while... Planes are pretty easy, helicopters, not so much...
