Not exactly true, how old is your canon? They've used the same EF mount since the late '80's, it's the same on all their SLR cameras. I don't think they've made any other lens mounts since then. There's also adapters for just about any lenses...I use some oldschool nikon lenses on my canon with good results, you just lose the auto features.

I have one also, they use standard EF lenses ... I have three Rebel series bodies and a 5D II and they all use the same lenses.

![]() I spent most of my research time couple of years back on http://www.imaging-resource.com/ --> Good for reviews and tech specs and images but not so much for their pricing detail. http://www.dpreview.com/ After which I went with a Nikon D90 which is still going strong.

I have a Nikon D7000 and D90 (sold my D200 earlier this year to get the 7000).
Sounds like you want a nice camera to take places and get great pictures of vacation, fun times and whatever. The D90 will fit every bit of that. If you want to stepup to a few more featuers, the D7000 rocks, but may be overkill depending on your needs/wants Like everyone has stated, the lens is where the bite comes on the wallet. A couple prime lens and a good zoom, you are set. Good luck, photography is fun and relaxing. |

I also forgot to ask... what kind of photography do you plan on using this camera for?
My D300s is great, and takes amazing photos... ![]() But it's big, heavy, cumbersome and not exactly the best for toting around on a daily basis for those random "hey check this out!" type of shot... ![]() So I've found my camera phone gets used for most of those "stumbling around town and just found this neat spot I need to come back to" type of photos. Do you want to carry your camera every day? There are some amazing point and shoots out there that you can carry in a cargo pocket, your lady's purse (my favorite haha), or even on your hip. I've got photos from my old Nikon point and shoot that I've had blown up to a poster size (I forget the dimensions, around 2' tall) that are gorgeous. No way to distinguish between those and my larger photos from my D80 too. What sizes do you want to print? Do you need a camera that can print 5' tall? Or will 8x10s be enough? You can answer these questions and maybe find a quality point and shoot will be a great fit for you, and will leave you money left over for things like a case, spare batteries, SD cards, baby-tripods, etc.

Here's a few shots with no editing, using a Canon Ti with a 100-400 L-Series lens.

I just bought one to replace my stolen T1i. I gotta say it is absolutely worth the price. The quicker shutter speed and the pop-out screen themselves are worth the extra money. Plus all the extra setting on top of the what the previous models would let you do is cool.
If your new to DSLRs, you would not regret this, it's fun to play around with it an figure out which settings are appropriate for the picture you are trying to take. I do reccomend to buy at least a cheap UV filter to protect the lense. I never use my camera without at least one filter on it. Here are some of the pictures I took with it: (granted I had just gotten it and didn't play with the settings too much). http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=178169 and http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=177224 Lenses are really expensive though.... |

WOW!
You know.....I don't think we can go wrong either way. Everyone here has basically said both are great....just a matter of preference. And quite frankly, I don't know that much about cameras in general except point and shoot hoping that it will not be blurry. We went to Best Buy yesterday and literally spent two hours holding and playing with the different cameras. They were really nice. One thing I noticed about the Nikon was that it was heavier. I think it was the D1000 that I was messing with...about 750 for the camera. I'll have to look into the D90? I think that's what you guys mentioned. But, they both worked really well. |
