Pretty sure it has to do with the efficiency of the motor, all of the cooling mods, the difference in weight between the ZL1, etc.
yeah 505hp 24mpg if you don't think that is good you are not very smart. that is hand calculated rolling 80mph up the freeway too. It could proabably do better if I drove slower.

show me another 500hp car that does better. the gas milage to power this old clunky pushrod engine is pretty amazing.

LOL

Dude, my GT is probably more like 525 HP with the Blower, Headers, etc.

My car barely gets less than your Vette, makes more power, weighs a shit ton more, and is way less aerodynamic with 4.10 gears.

Yep weight factor and taller gearing up front helped good old Ford avoid the tax. Sadly the ZL1 weighed too much and because of this the engineers had to do lower gearing up front to get the performance figures they wanted (i.e. 0-60 mph, 1/4 mile) to be competitive with the rest of the market. Hopefully the next generation Camaro (2015 maybe?) will be on par with Ford in the weight department

But I will be super impressed with the New GT500 if it avoids the GG tax because with all the ZR1's supercharged glory (similar HP/Torque figures to new GT500) and a more efficient LS9 motor (compared to LSA), they still couldn't avoid the tax :(

I don't believe it had it for the 2011/12 years and with the changes done, I don't see where that would change ...

This is from Ford's press release:

"Revised gearing
Nearly every gear on the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 was revised to manage the torque and use more of the power in a way that makes it more driver-friendly. Engineers considered more than 35 gearing combinations, finally deciding on one that delivers less torque all the way through the wheels to the ground and still enables the car to achieve fuel economy targets.

A key piece of the driveline, the six-speed manual transmission, offers upgraded gears, bearings and housing so it can properly manage the torque. The final drive ratio is now 3.31:1 for optimized overall vehicle gearing to complement the massive torque. Every gear besides fourth was optimized for competing performance metrics. The clutch has increased torque and rpm capacity and uses a dual-disc design."

Every gear besides fourth. Is that where they're making up their mileage?

Its the same weight +50 or so pounds plus a way more efficent blower. The HP means nothing to fuel economy number untill you give it boost. So when cruising in 6th is could have 200 more hp (by spinng the blower harder at WOT) but have the same fuel eco as before. Esp when u factor in the gearing. It's not hard to figure this out.

He is quoting the factory EPA highway rating. So don't act like your car is some fuel sipper, because your 2005 Mustang GT was rated 15 mpg/ 23 mpg (stock) by the same EPA standard that rated the C6Z06 at 14 mpg/ 24 mpg (stock). www.fueleconomy.gov

But if you want to talk real world, observed cruising, a Z06 can easily get 26-28 mpg, some guys even claim 30 mpg but I haven't been able to do it.

Also, it's a 7.0L engine on top of everything else that still gets better fuel efficiency than an engine that is 2/3rds its displacement

Man, that would suck if they made it by 1 MPG and we still have to pay GG tax. Anybody know what the MPG has to be to avoid the GG tax?

It's impressive, yes.

I can almost guarantee if my GT (not sure how you think I'm trying to make it look better) weighed 3100 something pounds, I'd get better MPG than I am now.

Point is, I have a 3800+ pound car, with aggressive gearing, F/I, and am getting around the same MPG as his car.

Again, He makes it sound like his car is getting great MPG, when some people have claimed nearly 30 MPG in a C6Z.

My car doesn't get "good" gas mileage by any means, but it does burn more fuel than his car, so yeah.

there is an equation too it. rull of thumb is about 23hwy probably wont have it.

I mean 6speed gt is 26 you add .8L and blower it is not going to increase fuel economy. the current gt 500 gets 23 but it has 3.55 gears the older 5.4 and I don't think it has it.
