I was going to start a thread about snoring so I searched first.

I have a BAAAAD snoring problem. Only when I gain a few pounds. I'm literally sleeping in the game room couches so poor Bonnie can sleep.

I've been a loud snorer for years now, but in the last two weeks I finally went to a doctor because I've been super tired, even during the day.

Basically, I not only snore, but have Sleep Apnea...which means I stop breathing for 10 seconds or so at a time, then start breathing again after waking up. Essentially, whent his happens, your body gives a shot of adreniline. Because of that, I don't get deep or REM sleep. I did a sleep study a little over a week ago, and will be getting a CPAP machine to basically help prevent this. 17lbs pressure...

WIth the machine, I will get deep and REM sleep, something I've probably been not getting for the last 10 years.

But I still have sleep apnea....so bad that during a surgery in 2005, I went in respitory failure and almost didn't come back.....No more normal anisthesia for me, it will shut me down (flatline). Also a current bi-pap user!
Worse then getting a needle shoved in your eye while awake and no drugs/anesthetic?

I have been a snorer for 15 years. I was always tired, but I was just too pig headed to go to the doctor. Finally, my wife said it was fix the problem, or sleep in the garage. I was so loud people could hear me from outside, so I saw an ENT. He sent me for a sleep study. Turns out I had apnea.

They put me on a bipap, and the difference was amazing. I slept through the night and felt remarkable. My wife started to sleep through the night as well and this improved our relationship. No longer were we sleeping apart, I was in the same bed as my wife.

I want to reiterate what many have said on here. Snoring is a symptom of something wrong. It could be that the person has apnea (life threatening) or is overweight (again this can be life threatening).

My simple advice for anyone that snores. MAN UP, and go see a doctor. The worst thing you can do is treat a symptom and not the real problem. In this case my treatment with the bipap has probably saved my life.

I now have a small travel bipap that can run on batteries and I even wear it on planes.

If you snore, are over 25, have a large neck or are overweight... go to your doctor and DEMAND a sleep study.

Chances are high you have sleep apnea. Those of you have it should know, it's serious and it's a killer. It wears down your heart and takes years off of your life.

Had my father's been diagnosed earlier, he might not have died at 51 (when I was 17). And it's nothing to even joke about "dying peacefully in your sleep." I was with him, he wasn't asleep and it wasn't peaceful. A heart attack caused by a failing heart (induced by sleep apnea) is NOT a pleasant way to go.

If you guys think you might possibly have it - especially those who stop sleeping in their sleep (you do have it)- get to a doctor, immediately. It could seriously save your life.

I'm 23 (24 in August) and in decent physical shape - but I have a bigger neck. I get my first sleep study this fall and will do one annually until either I need treatment or until I'm too old for it to matter.

I make this my PSA to anyone I meet. I wish someone had done it for my family, so I figure if I can help just one person, well, that's good enough for me.
