I hate to say it but I think this is the end of the Camaro and Corvette.
They may make them till the new CAFE regs. kick in and then I think it will be all over.
Gov't "boreocrats" are going to have GM building 45 mpg econoboxes as soon as possible.

Why.....when you have one political party attempting to take control and change everything that is great about this country, it is my patriotic duty to speak up and call it like i see it.

This is what happens when you go holding out your hands for money to the gov't.
At the same time if a failing business were to ask me for money you can bet I would be in the drivers seat as a condition(see Warren Buffett).

Yep ..... Unfortuntely this is what was expected (did anyone really think otherwise) .. GM Will get through this and survive. Will it be different than today you bet and it should be .. eventually I believe it will come out stronger ... I do hope that at some point in time though (once loans are payed off??) the government steps out.

With the board entirely gone...if that's true...GM will finally have what they've needed for so long...the thing that single-handedly allowed Ford to turn around...product, and decison-making FREEDOM. Nothing has to be put past "the board" anymore....

Fear of "the board" is what prevented GM from coming out with a Prius fighter some years ago.

Of all the news today...if this is true -- it's truly good news.

See there is the problem, the regulations should be relaxed for a few years until the car industry gets back on it's feet... this would save the car companies Billions of dollars without costing us taxpayers one red cent.

Good point but you think Pelosi and that bunch would really consider relaxing CAFE?
I very much doubt it.
Get your Camaro or Vette now! They won't be around much longer.

Trying to discuss the current auto industry without politics is like trying to discuss congress without politics. Sure it can be done, but it will be devoid of substance on many key issues. I wish this wasn't the case but it is and they are becoming more intertwined everyday. Maybe a new board will do GM some good, but it doesn't fix GM's excessive legacy and labor cost issues.

Considering the White House is being run by people that have never run so much as a lemonade stand...if this is happening....the automakers won't be here long.

Futhermore, the White House is not the only part of government that makes the rules. They did not make the decision alone to bail out GM. It was a Congressional decision. It seems to me, it would take a congressional decision representing the tax payers to force GM to do anything.

in Obama's eyes, GM is not a private company anymore..That is the real trick behind all these "orders"...

I agree, a sub-forum should be created to allow talk of politics once more. I think it is about time considering the Government will soon own a majority stake in GM.. This forum shouldn't cater to silencing or censoring talk that I feel is very important during these times.. Remember that sugar-coating everything and erasing threads that are simply going against the current administration is only helping out the take-over..

I don't want to get political about it, I am going to talk in general terms and this would go for whomever would be in charge.....

If they are sincere about helping the auto industry they should, but if all they are doing is trying to blow smoke up our butts to make us think "well we did everything WE could to help and they still failed"
I think EVERYTHING should be on the table...If the auto industry/Unions have to make sacrifices so should the US government.

P.S. this also goes for emmisions regs that are getting stricter for other manufacturers as well...

After reading of Wagoner’s resignation over the weekend I figured there would be a big thread on it here. And figured it would get locked too.

I don’t understand how you all can think of Wagoner as a scapegoat (same goes for the BoD that enabled him). He’s been in charge for what, 6-8 years and has seen his companies stock go from $70+ to $1. Who else do you hold accountable if not the man at the top? Remember the credit crunch is only a year or so old and GM has not been profitable for 3-4 years. How can you commend a man who did not close down brands that compete with each other when times were good and they could afford it?

You can say it’s the unions fault but you’d be wrong. It’s partly the unions fault but management had to agree to those terms. If you have a child that demands and demands and you give them what they want who is to blame? The child? No it’s the parent who must take responsibility. Lutz, Wagoner, Henderson and all the cronies on the board need to go. Someone like Mulally needs to be brought in and given the authority to affect real change. There are talented people in GM and they need to be allowed to do their jobs.

GM needs 2 brands, Chevrolet and Cadillac. Why make a car under several different nameplates even on the same platform that competes for the same consumer (G6/Aura, Traverse/Outlook/Acadia, etc). If Pontiac was to be a performance division then there would be no need of the Camaro and Corvette. If you have the Camaro and Corvette why have Pontiac? They could have made Saturn a green division but they have hybrids in Chevy and the upcoming Volt in Chevy so no need of that.

Expect to see a Chapter 11 restructuring of GM with federally backed warranties (as I suggested months ago) and a chapter 7 liquidation of Chrysler with only Jeep surviving or more bought by Chinese backed hedge funds. Why would Fiat marry into Chrysler when they could buy the manufacturing capacity and dealer network they want for pennies on the dollar in chapter 7?

GM has made this bed, not the government now it’s time for them to learn from their mistakes and emerge as a viable economic factor. That starts with good leadership and an unfortunate bankruptcy restructuring.
