Actually by law all two strokes are being phased out and not made anymore. You wont be able to buy them at all very soon. When they run out then there is no more.

Reportedly the White House will bump MPG standards by %8 by 2011.
http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/27/r...-by-8-by-2011/ Could mean bad news for our V8's. We'll have to see what GM will do.

Why do people keep missing the point that this is the average fleet fuel economy number?
Take an SS @ 21mpg avg, pair it with two Cobalt XFEs @ 31mpg avg and your overall fleet average is 27.6mpg. Throw in a Volt and you're way over the target mpg. As long as small cars outsell less fuel efficient V8 sports cars, GM won't have any problem meeting this new target. |

CAFE is a product-line average. If they build enough Volts, 37MPG Cobalts, 40MPG Kruzes and 29MPG Camaros, I think the 25MPG SS is safe. I don't agree with the screw-Cali-let's-blow-blue-smoke crowd. Driving cars that emit pollution and use gas is a privilege and a responsibility. If we can pull this off cleaner and more efficiently, we should.
(Looking forward to my 2014 Turbo-4/plug-in hybrid Camaro. Camaro Volt RS!) Aah, I see I ran the highway numbers. But I agree with Rolnslo, it still works. Last edited by Joe Remi; 03-27-2009 at 12:47 PM. |

Um, yeah. Debating warming/cooling theories doesn't change the fact that internal combustion engines produce pollution and consume a finite resource. If we can get it to work while producing and consuming less, why not?

Use to live in California. Most beautiful place to live. Unfortunately it's taken over by nuts and foreigners. Hopefully they will get their way, pass more insane laws, and the Car Companies will just pull out of there , like all other businesses do.

The age of the V8 Muscle car is coming to an end....one of the main reasons I am getting my Camaro now, before they pussify it to get 40 MPG.

From the article:
"The long-expected rule poses no hurdle for the industry, as it’s 0.3 m.p.g. higher that the average of cars and trucks sold in the 2008 model year. That average is expected to continue rising, since all major automakers have committed to building more efficient models in the face of uncertain fuel prices and tougher regulations." Yeah, it puts a bit of strain on the automakers, but with the DI and Ecoboost engines being used in more and more vehicles, I don't think it poses much of a threat. Besides, the Volt alone will push GM's overall MPG rating up by 1 or so when it launches. |

This isn't really "news". The standard of 35 by 2020 was set last year. GM as a whole may be a little bit lower, but I know for a fact that as of last year, CHEVROLET had a average mpg rating of 27.5x...so this isn't too bad...yet.
And so long as the gov't compensates the Industry with the likes of that $25 billion set aside for "green" vehicles. I personally, don't have a problem with it...I agree with the theory...just not the execution, if that makes any sense. :( |

The Camaro will be fine. Remember -- this is FLEET avg. fuel economy. So alll the vehicles must be factored in to meet this standard. With the likes of the Cruze @ 40+mpg, and the Volt at 100+mpg....GM should still be capable of producing fun cars that people want.
(That's not to say that I agree with this dookie that is CAFE..... |

I'd rather see lower emissions than higher gas mileage any day.
Instead of mandating these higher CAFE standards, how about we mandate more E85 vehicles? And put the money into the industry to get more E85 pumps running? Personally, I don't run anything other than the 10% ethanol in my car because of the lower emissions. - Xanthos
