From a guy who has been in a wheelchair now for 20 after a racing accident and now uses a high tech Ti wheelchair made of titanium and carbon fiber I will tell you what. Thanks to all the good responders here who support not parking no matter what the condition. When I drive my Camaro and before I hang my plastic placard on the rear view mirror people are giving me dirty looks because disabled people drive vans not hot rods. Then they quickly change their minds when they see me pull out the chair. Breaks their pre conceptions on what and who disabled people are. I need the extra space to open my door to get the wheelchair out because you all know how wide it is to fully open that door is. There are visible and invisible disabilities. I can be seen from a great distance as being disabled. A person MS, cancer, breathing problems that prevent you from walking any great distance will get you a disability placard. So if you are not their personal Doctor don't start making your own personal diagnosis of what is wrong with them because you really don't have a clue. I also see people with cards running into places and some are using their Grandmothers card which is illegal. So some people do abuse the system. No f any system that people don't abuse?

Also, I understand that people should generally not park in handicapped parking spaces regardless but in situations where the entire lot is empty including 10 handicapped parking spaces right in front and you are just running in for a second, this is something that is good to know.

You are correct, without the sign they are NOT enforceable handicap parking spots. All handicap spots must have the blue and white sign on them. In the case of Florida the signs must have a F.S. number on them with a fineable amount given on the sign. Also if you have a handicap plate or hang tag, you don't have to pay for metered parking.

Pretty sure you'd qualify as mentally handicapped for even considering this. You might want to look into getting your own nifty mirror tag.

First off that fact that you are considering parking anywhere NEAR the building is a problem. Secondly the handicapped spots are for the people that need them. Park across the street and walk. My 93 year old grandma and her hip replacement thank you.

Just double park in front of store.. it would look better in court then taking a handicap spot in an empty parking lot..

I have back injury and was offered handicap permit and I didnt take it.. Figured leave it for someone that really needs.. Though where I am at just looks like lazy old people that dont really need it..

I parked in a Handicapped spot on Friday. I pulled on and there was 1 spot. I pulled in and went in to shop. I came out and the 2 cars on either side were gone and I saw the blue markings. I didn't even know it was a handicapped spot. There was no sign in front. I didn't get caught but I still felt bad when I saw what I did.

You did nothing wrong, without the proper signage they were not active Handicap Parking spots ...

I don't think you can have a conversation about the law without also talking about morals as most laws are based on that cultures morals.

Plus your hypothetical situation has a huge error. If the entire parking lot is empty, just take the spot next to the handicap spot. Normal parking is just one space away in most if not all lots. you save like what ten steps by using the handicap spot vs the next avail normal spot. It would be super stupid to get a ticket for parking in a handicap spot and the entire lot is empty.

The fact that you are even looking up state and fed law regarding handicap parking and you are not handicapped says something.

While I and others aren't here to judge you and there are some pricks on this forum, it doesn't take much to know a duchebag when you see one.
